Here is an example,

zhe4 ge nan2 hai2 zi mei2 you3 bi3

and

zhe4 ge nan2 hai2 zi you3 yi3 zhi1 bi3

Now i can work out odd words but how can i find out full sentences and phrases so I can get better understandings of what the pictures mean.

I know Rosetta Stone and programs like that are not made for that but I am only using programs like this for extra learning methods when i get free time.

I just typed this using pinyin input, but with no spaces. I was only forced to choose characters for zi and bi3. The nice
thing about beginning stuff is that the first choice with pinyin input typing is usually correct. When you get to the
harder stuff, you'll probably have more experience and be able to guess better too, so it will all probably work
out. Just out of curiosity, why are you doing this? Isn't there a transcript for Rosetta Stone?

Ah thank you leosmith. What program did you use for typing in Pinyin?

Its not at my place but My friend doesnt seem to think there is one. I just thought I would ask because I have come across a few programs that didnt translate and I only knew the odd meaning to a couple of words.

Thanks again

You can set up your computer to type in Mandarin, using pinyin input. You can google how to do it (I have a Mac).

You lost me. Characters have readings, right?

Well, I was thinking of different languages all mostly using the same characters, but yet, strictly within Mandarin, that is true.

My initial main point was that there are tens of thousands of different characters, but only about 1,600 different sounds in Mandarin, so characters will necessarily be more precise in meaning, whereas a simple pinyin syllable will invariably have far more possible meanings than its unique corresponding character.

If you can't figure out the input method on your computer you can also go to Google
Translate, select Chinese, check allow phonetic typing and go ahead and type in plain
pinyin. This is also a “smart” input method, so it's able to guess many characters from
context.
