Well, as has been pointed out, Pinyin has (if written correctly) capitalization and spaces, meaning it's often more clear. It tells you what's to be grouped as a word, and it tells you what sounds are names or places. That simplifies things a lot. Also, truckloads of characters have multiple pronunciations, so characters are not necessarily more precise than Pinyin. you can write it in Mandarin ime, and see what you will get.
