My initial main point was that there are tens of thousands of different characters, but only about 1,600 different sounds in Mandarin, so characters will necessarily be more precise in meaning, whereas a simple pinyin syllable will invariably have far more possible meanings than its unique corresponding character.

Well, as has been pointed out, Pinyin has (if written correctly) capitalization and spaces, meaning it's often more clear. It tells you what's to be grouped as a word, and it tells you what sounds are names or places. That simplifies things a lot. Also, truckloads of characters have multiple pronunciations, so characters are not necessarily more precise than Pinyin.

you can write it in Mandarin ime, and see what you will get.
Google ime is very intelligent - it will guess the correct character for you.
You can use it online: http://www.google.com/tr ansliterate
