La verdad es que nunca he sido una persona que disfruta de la lectura pero voy a tener
que desarrollar el hábito para alcanzar la soltura que busco en castellano. Esta semana
tuve la oportunidad de leer durante 2-3 horas en seguidas y me di cuenta por primera vez
de lo eficaz que puede resultar la lectura.
Estoy de acuerdo que llegar a un nivel muy avanzado en un idioma requiere mucho leer. No
sé si la meta que me fijé de leer 10 mil páginas en el año 2013 sea posible o no. Pero si
sé que llegar a un nivel muy avanzado en un idioma requiere leer pero muchísimo.

Spanish Update:

594 pages of reading
77 hours of listening

I've seen several examples of what I would consider C1 or C2 Spanish speakers. It is
very good for me to see this. It lets me see that it is possible to acheive what I'm
working towards. However, every example of a C1/C2 speaker I've seen has either been in
an immersion environment in a Spanish speaking country or someone who is in a
relationship/married to a native speaker. There are simply more opportunities to learn
in those situations. Regardless of the fact that I find myself in neither of those
situations, I will continue to move towards C1, however slowly that may be.

French:

Creeping along at a slow pace. I'm in Assimil lecon 7. I'm practicing the production of
french sentences from the limited vocabulary I have. I'm praticing getting used to
thinking in the language. I'm continuing to work on reading, listening, writing,
talking, and translating in French. I look forward to getting better.

If you don't mind me asking, What techniques do you use to practice thinking in the TL?

hey Vestis2!

I practice making up new sentences in French that aren't in Assimil with the vocabulary
I have right now. It helps me know what words I need to know next when I get stuck
trying to say something. Obviously, I can't say very much in French right now and I'm
sure I make mistakes. I simply talk to myself out loud as if I were talking to someone
else. Every now and then I record it to measure my progress.

I started doing the same thing in Spanish a few months ago and I find it has helped me.
I will explain something I have learned, read that day, or something that interests me
as if I sharing it with a native. In Spanish, my recordings could be anywhere from 3-6
minutes. (I've gotten noticably better since starting this back in April) In French, I
create 3-4 sentences and I'm done. This is all done ad lib. This is a speaking exercise
helps me to think faster and more accurately in the L2.

Something else that I think is helping me to think in French is that I write out each
Assimil lesson twice after I do all my listening, reading, shadowing for the day. I
find myself mentally "saying" the words as I write them in French. Since I'm doing each
lesson twice, I can write it by memory on the second day. I like the writing portion of
my study just as much as any other part.

Keep up the Spanish!!

Weekly updates:

Spanish
723 pages of reading
88 hours of listening

I spoke with a native I met this week for 3 hours. It was a good time to test how much my Spanish had
improved since I started making a concerted effort to work on it. I made some silly mistakes but she
congratulated me on my ability and told me I had no gringo accent. It turns out she teaches Spanish as a
second language to a small group of students. She invited me to meet the group in a few weeks. I felt like I
was doing well that day and then today I came across a slew of words in my reading and listening that I did
not know. The more you know, the more you realize just how MUCH you don't know and Spanish is no
exception.

French

I'm currently on Assimil Lecon 10

I learning French through Spanish in the version of Assimil that I have.
