Hello. I am a newbie French learner, First time here. This is my first post.
My mother tongue is Korean, and I learned English for several years. My reading and listening are better than my speaking and writing. My writing is like an elementary school student. I am practicing my English writing skills on lang-8.com but that is different story.

I decided to learn French. I have wanted to learn French forever. I want to apply to the doctors without borders as a nurse. My experience as a nurse is only three years. I need more time to be a good, experienced nurse before I apply. It requires enough time. So I decided to learn French but couldn’t afford a personal tutor. It is quite rare and expensive in South Korea.

And I found Pimsleur. Ohhh! I can LEARN it by MYSELF!! I wanted to learn French very fast so finished 15 lessons for a week. After that, I found that I cannot understand recordings anymore. New lesson are all mystery! I couldn’t grasp the ideas. I humbly came back to the lesson 8. Now I am doing 10 and feeling good with pronunciation and simple sentences I already learn.

I am very happy with Pimsleur but I wanted to read things. So I started Assimil French from yesterday. It is quite longer than simple sentences from Pimsleur.

My plan is simple. I will complete Pimsleur I, II, III, IV. If I need to have two or three days to completely understand and memorize a lesson, I will have two or three days. Speed is not important for me. I want to use exact French.

So the first thing is finishing Pimsleur I. I hope I will do it in one month.

Assimil is my main method. I will do one lesson a day, for passive phase. I will listen ten or twenty times a dialog, and read sentences in French and English with listening for five or ten times. After that, I will shadowing ten or twenty times until I feel enough. I found this way from someone’s blog, but forgot who’s idea was it. I think it is very good idea.

Working in the ‘Doctors without borders’ is my ultimate dream. I want to speak and listen French with other people to achieve that goal. Someday, after learning French with 18 or 24 months, I want to learn Spanish or Italian with French Assimil book. It is such a future, I wonder when the times comes.

Also someday I want to read Le Petit Nicolas in French. I already read them in Korean. It is one of my favorite story.

I will post my progress from now on.

Do not feel bad about your English writing. Even though you keep it simple, it is quite clear. Good luck on your journey. Also check out FSI French, which is free and available on the internet. Also, I agree that Pimsleur is very fun :)

Yes! I am not the only one who enjoys Pimsleur. Thank you for encouragement. Your post made me smile.

I will check out FSI French after I finish Assimil :) Thanks! I am open to all suggestions.

**** Pimsleur Level I : 13/30
Today I just returned to the lesson 11 and found out I forgot most of the lesson. I did repeat lesson 11~13 today. So the progress is slow.

**** Assimil French 5/100
I decided to change the method to do Assimil. I was in passive phase for five days. I slept most of time. I guess I should try translate Assimil dialog from French to English and from English to French. I hope it will improve my French spelling.

**** Vocabulary 62/500
I remembered 31% of 500 new words.

http://www.languagecourse.net/en/french-vocabulary.php

This site is free and wonderful. I knew many new words. I also got some spell that I always wondered from the Pimsleur from beginning.

I wanted to do the super challenge but felt too late because it is already June 2013, and I can’t read the French books yet. I searched internet bookstore of Korea, and found some easy French books.

------------------------------------------------------------ -----
A1
------------------------------------------------------------ -----
Arsene Lupin, Le bouchon de cristal
Peur sur la Ville
S.O.S Urgences
Mais ou est Louise?
Le casque mysterieux
Quinze jours pour reussir
------------------------------------------------------------ -----

Arsene Lupin is only 40 page with 27 minute audio CD. It is crazy! How you can abridge the Lupin for 40 page. But I would like to feel the Lupin from easy stage. He was my childhood hero! These book are for A1 learners so I hope I can learn much from them.

Other books are mostly within 50~70 minute.

I know I am in early stage for it. But I really love books and love to buy books. I also bought several A2 level books written by French.

-----------------------------------------------------
A2
------------------------------------------------------
Atelier De Lecture : Pas de frontiere pour l'amitie
Un agent tres secret
Le Jour ou J'ai Rate Le bus
Un printemps vert panique
Carton Rouge ou Mort Subite
Avertissement de conduite
Crime d`auteur
La fille qui vivait hors du temps
------------------------------------------------------

These are total 13 books. Every book contains audio CD. I guess I can read them for ten times. Then I will try to read the Petit Nicolas.

I also found some French animation and movies I wanted to watch.

-------------------------------------------------------
Kirikou et Les Hommes et Les Femmes
Kirikou et la Sorciere
Azur Et Asmar
Princes et princesses
Untouchable (I saw it already but will try again)
--------------------------------------------------------

It is hard to detect which movie is French or English in Korea. I would love to find more. I am sure there will be more.

I would love to hear suggestions.

**** Pimsleur Level I : 14/30
I repeated lesson 14 for ten or eleven times. Finally I can make some sentences by myself without listening audio. I felt good. Since English is not my mother tongue, I guess I take more time to be familiar with French.

**** Assimil French 6/100
It goes same with Assimil French. I hope to understand daily dialog after I repeated audio for ten times. But that is not possible for me. I have to repeat the dialog for thirty or forty times to be familiar with it. It takes a lot of time.

**** Vocabulary 254/500
I remembered 52% of 500 new words. It does not mean I memorized all of them. I am familiar with 177 words and got new 67 more words. It has the point feature. I already got 14556 points. Make points high feels good. I enjoy this vocabulary site very much.

**** So on
I watched Kirikou et la Sorciere with my boyfriend. I got French version of it with Korean subtitle. It was really great show. The hero was cute. If I did not decide to learn French, I would never watch this animation! I am so happy to found a good animation director. I will check his works. I hope to finish his works this month.

The French audio was difficult. I could not grasp most of audio. I just got two or three words from it. I have no firm goals. But I will re-watch it someday to check my level.

I feel so good! 

My goal was to finish Pimsleur I by the end of June. However, I am too impatient now. I can’t focus on Pimsleur and tickle this one and tickle other. I should keep focusing on one thing.

I already read one book of French Level A1 series with audio. I am working through the “Quinze jours pour reussir” with reading and listening. Right now I couldn’t grasp 10% of it. It feels really difficult even though it is only for level A1. Things seem to be improving, but it’s going to take a lot more work to get me to the point when I can understand whole book.

I should study more grammar and vocabulary. I ordered two book. First is and Grammaire Progressive du francais Niveau Debutant, Livre (+CD)and Vocabulaire en dialogues Niveau Debutant (+CD) Both book are for A1 level learners. I hope those book will help my understand of the book.

*** Pimsleur 14/30 (repeating)

*** Assimil 8/50 (passive phase) 0/50 (active phase)
I guess listening and relaxing does not work for me. Those are effective for English-speakers but not for me. I am changing my method, to write down the dialog and to repeat them again.

*** Vocabulary trainer

I have finished A1 phase 1 (500 words) of this website. I was quite happy with that for a few second. Now I am in A2, and I only passed 7 % of 1250 words. Gah. There are so much to do.

I watched one more French animation, The Princes and princess.
I do not need to wonder what I would do finish out of audio lessons. I already have ten animations and fifteen books with audio.

Also I am learning Japanese by myself.
