I have had an interest in Nordic countries for some time and have had an interest in
Scandinavian languages since I started studying German some years ago. I am lucky
enough to go to a university that offers Norwegian and Swedish courses however they are
both only offered up to second year (around A2 but I thinks the Swedish class ends at
B1 or B2, I'm pretty sure it moves faster than the rest of the foreign language courses
at my uni) with the first year course offered every other year as not enough people are
interested in the languages. This means that this Fall Swedish 101 will be offered and
Norwegian 201 will be offered.

While I could take Swedish (and I am actually registered for it in the Fall) I am much
more interested in Norwegian and Norway for some unknown reason. Because of this I have
decided to spend this summer studying Norwegian in the hopes of entering into second
year Norwegian in the Fall (in which case I wouldn't take Swedish).

As of now I will be using the textbook Norsk Nordmenn og Norge along with the
workbook and audio. This is the same textbook that my uni uses. I bought the text and
workbook from the publisher in an ebook format (protected PDF I think) as well as the
audio. I also have a hardcover copy of the book that I got from my Uni's library as
sometimes it's easier for me to work from the same book in hard copy format rather than
via my iPad.

The book looks pretty good. It has a lot of reading passages which is very important to
me and the workbook has dedicated listening exercises (including dictation) as well as
answers for all of the exercises in the workbook.

My primary worry is what my speaking ability and pronunciation is going to look like.
Portland, Oregon doesn't have much of a Norwegian community but I'm on Skype all the
time so I'll probably try to find someone to talk to in Norwegian on Skype.

I'm not working this summer and thus have a lot of time on my hands to study so I'm
going to attempt to make the most of it. If anyone has any suggestions on how to
structure my time or resources to use I would love to read them.

Would the first year courses be only 2h/week? If so, you shouldn't worry about your pronunciation compared to your classmates, they will probably suck even more.
If the course runs 4h/week + homework, you might get into trouble catching up, but you will see.

Daegga - the first year course is 4/week + homework but it's four hours all in one day.
The scheduling is the main reason I didn't take Norwegian last school year but I have a
feeling that it's the only time that the professor can have class. That said, if I don't
make enough progress to take the second year class in the fall (Class starts the last
week of September) I won't be heartbroken. I will be sad but it won't be the end of the
world.
