This log is only about German.
I am discontinuing my first log because I'm using completely different resources and methods. I also think that definite dates will help me achieve my goals, instead of setting vague goals to accomplish sometime in the future. I'm using the Schritte book+audio series. Finishing Schritte 4 is an A2 level. When I find other stuff, I'll add them to my schedule. So, without further ado... Study time: at least 1 hr/day. One day a week, I can study 2 hours or more. Schedule Schritte 1 Schritte lessons 4-7 by 7/17/13 Schritte lesson exercises 2-7 by 7/20/13 Schritte 2 Schritte lessons 1-7 by 8/3/13 Schritte lesson exercises 1-7 by 8/13/13 Schritte 3 Schritte lessons 1-7 by 8/27/13 Schritte lesson exercises 1-7 by 8/15/13 Schritte 4 To be added when I get there... I'm also using Deutsch: Warum Nicht?, which is a German podcast by DW. It's really good because of the dialogues and the portability. I'll be interested in your progress as I am using the Schritte series too but the Swiss
edition which is slightly different. I've almost completed the first book and have to say it is really easy to work with and quite enjoyable. Good luck with your studies! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Morgen I completed Schritte Lektion 4: I went on random.org and I generated a lot of numbers between 1 and 999,999 and I said them aloud in German. I also have a few questions: I assume "1-Zi-Apartment" means "Ein Zimmer Apartment," right? Also why do they say Aparment instead of Wohnung? But doesn't living room+kitchen+bedroom+bathroom=4 rooms? Add a closet and you have 5 rooms? In the book, they write "74 € pro Person/Woche". I have two questions about how this is said in speech. Do you say Euro or Euros? And also "Person/Woche" is said "Person pro Woche", right? Is ln at the end of words pronounced like "lin"? Like sammeln is pronounced "zamlin" or is it "zamelin"? Mittag Deutsch: Warum Nicht? Podcast Chapters 4-5 This podcast is from Deutsch Welle and I'll be listening to it when I am doing chores or something menial. I listened to Chapters 1-3 yesterday while waiting in line. Today, I listened to 4-5. It teaches very basic stuff, but still useful for filling in gaps in my knowledge. For example, today I learned of the word doch which is used often, but I didn't know the meaning until now. Nachmittag Warum Nicht? Chapters 6-7 Abend Warum Nicht? I would say 1-Zi-Apartment means Ein Zimmer Apartment.
As for 'Apartment' instead of 'Wohnung' it must be like here in the UK where some people use the word 'flat' and some use 'apartment'. I am guessing it's like the UK, we don't count the toilet, bathroom or kitchen as rooms. There is no 's' on Euro. The add does have 'pro' in front of Person/Woche - I'd say pro Person pro Woche. If you search for the word on dict.cc there are three human voices and it doesn't sound like a clear 'lin' but more like saying 'sammel-n'. You can often find the term 1ZKB which means 1 Zimmer, Küche, Bad. This is more or less equivalent with 1-Zi-Apartment. Although the kitchen doesn't have to be in a separate room, it might be in the corridor. 1-Zi-Apartment doesn't have living romm+bedroom, those are usually combined in these small flats. I think that's the reason it is also called Einliegerwohnung, you just don't put a double bed into you living room. 74 Euros would be 74 1-euro coins, at least in colloquial use. pro Person/Woche could be either "pro Person pro Woche" or "pro Person und Woche", the meaning is the same it's like in math: pro Person + pro Woche = pro (Person + Woche) Edited by daegga on 12 July 2013 at 7:26pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It seems that I've threw my commitment to doing a lesson of Schritte every one or two days out der Tür. I use what little time I have to study German to read other people's logs on HTLAL instead. Essentially, I'm reading more about learning and not learning. That's a bit of a problem.. Today's "progress" I listened to Warum Nicht? I did a ton of units on Duolingo today. I finished Lektion 5 in Schritte today! There was a section where Robert's mom called him and asked him when he was visiting her. Robert gave a sob story about how he was too busy working and that he had an English course in the evening, etc, etc. In reality, Robert was just being a couch potato at home. I wrote some sentences about his actual daily routine, but I have some questions on some of the more complex sentences: Am Nachmittag ruft Robert Sofia an. (are the names Robert and Sofia supposed to go together? It sounds a bit ambiguous. Am Abend gehen Robert und Sofia ins Kino. In der Nacht gehen Robert und Sofia spazieren. (I'm not sure how to invert the sentence when there's two verbs.) What if there's three verbs? In der Nacht wollen Robert und Sofia spazieren gehen?? The activity at the end was challenging. It involved Anne, who went sightseeing in Berlin for half a day. She has a friend, Rolf, in Berlin and they decide to meet up at 18:00 to go to a restaurant by the river. Anyways, it's 10 o'clock am and I have to plan out Anne's itinerary. She has a list of things that she wants to do/see. FOr each of the activities, there is a brochure (picture) that gives some background info and also tells you when it's open...if it's open the day Anne's in Berlin (July 29th). THis is what I came up with: von 10:30 bis 12:30 - Anne mache eine Stadtrundfahrt mit dem Schiff. von 12:30 bis 13:30 - Anne isst im Selbsbedienungsrestaurant im KaDeWe (ein Fisch Kaufhaus) von 13:30 bis 15:30 - Anne sieht ein Bild im Brücke-Museum. von 15:30 bis 17:30 - Anne sieht den Film "Der Himmel über Berlin" im IMAX-Kino. von 18:00 bis 19:30 - Anne und Rolf essen im Restaurant She wanted to go see Reichstagskuppel, but it was closed for cleaning :( There was also a tongue-twister at the end, which went like: Fischers Fritz ißt frische Fische, frische Fische ißt Fischers Fritz. Never in a million years will I be able to say it as fast as the guy on the tape did. I can barely even say it slowly!
