How do you really use this program and what is the best way?

Is there better programs than this?

I am learning mandarin (just starting) and would appreciate any tips that could help.

Read my blog post about Anki at
http://www.learnlangs.com/blog/2010/09/22/addicted-to-learni ng-vocabulary/

I don't think there's a better program, especially if you're using the Chinese-only
functionalities like automatic Pinyin generator, tracker for the characters you know etc.

they have some good tips here: http://www.antimoon.com/how/usingsm-makeitems.htm
Those are for SuperMemo, but essentially all SRS programs are the same, the differences are not significant enough that any of them is better than the others. I myself prefer Anki because there's a web version and sync'ing is easy, but you might like some minor or not so minor features of other programs:)
See the tags above too:)

Hello, I have just read your blog. Great work and thank you for your reply.

Would you recommend me starting with no decks and just putting my own words in that I need to learn. (building It up as I learn)

or would you Import someone else's stack that is popular?

I still don't really know how to use it but again, thank you for your blog.

Thank you Serpent, I will look at them.

Do you know how I put audio onto my words by any chance?

Nope, I don't use that. But that must be in the FAQ's somewhere.
The thing is that recordings of individual words may sound unnatural - beyond the most basic exchanges, we normally use sentences - at least short ones. and even when you do say just one word, the intonation will probably carry the rest of the meaning.

Besides, consider using sentences rather than individual words. For me Anki is a tool for reliving some of the best moments I've had in my target languages<3 Sometimes the source of joy was just "yay I understand this!" but often more than just that:)

Yes thank you for the advice.

I want to learn sentences as I agree with you but Feel the new words I come across should be put Into anki with its charactor and meaning so I can build my vocabulary up.

I got Anki a while back but I've just started using it in the past few days. I've been using Quizlet for learning vocab but that involves making new lists all the time and making myself go over ones I already know. Anyway, Anki seems to be great, it's really helping me.
