Anki is a great idea but it does have bugs in it. You can potentially
lose a lot of hard
work, and doing a quick search it seems a lot of people have been affected by these
glitches, especially if you sync with your mobile device.

I have been using Anki for many years, and I use it with my iphone, and never lost any
data. On the Anki mailing list reports of data loss are rare and almost always linked to
Dropbox. I don't use Dropbox to host my Anki.

Been using Anki for a while and the only errors I've seen are due to my forgetting to sync working on another machine and then syncing out of order. I'm running 6 decks with 3000 cards and not really seeing problems after over 2 years.

In order to avoid the infrequent problem, it is quite easy to create a master backup of each deck.

- Open up a deck xxx
- Export
- right click, create a "backup" folder
- Open Folder
- Export xxx.backup as an Anki deck in the that new folder

If you lose your cards you can easily restore them.
I usually back cards up after a major update or once a month or so.

you can avoid dropbox with this guide. See the manual set-up section.

I don't need media files on my iphone. I have two decks that rely on media, geography and
Chinese movie lines (for listening comprehension). The iphone screen is too small to
effectively display those maps, and the subway is too noisy to allow me to discern the
already-scrambled movie speech, so I don't sync those decks at all and work on other
decks instead.

Yes I've tried all the steps in the link provided but still get the same problem.

All I can suggest is the troubleshooting guide in the same section and contacting them directly.
I use very little media with Anki, that limits the issues, so my case might not be the most useful to you.

I am actually on their mailing list hence why I noticed others having problems with media
and dropbox.

I agree, Anki Desktop and Anki Mobile synchronization and the media sync with Dropbox don't seem to work
properly. Once I returned from a 3 week trip and the synchronization with Anki Desktop failed. All my statuses from
the iPhone were lost.

I am now using Flashcards Deluxe, the app costs only 3 €, is feature-rich and very stable. The SRS, in my opinion, is
better than in Anki.
