As Homer Simpson would say, "D'oh!" I goofed today, I was pretty tired this morning and I accidentally did Lesson 13 of Assimil when I was supposed to do Lesson 12. Don't ask me how...it was a long night last night. Anyway, I also worked on the Penguin course. It's getting a lot harder than I thought, I'm still motivated and all but all these cases! And yet...as difficult as it seems, it's also fascinating to me that some people are able to get to the point where the language just flows off their lips.

Wanderlust has been striking again, although in my case I'd call it a severe form of adult ADD. Or something...anyways, I gave in to temptation and bought a copy of Colloquial Portuguese (book and two audio CDs). Portuguese has interested me for a long time, and I just can't wait. I have been learning Spanish for about 18 years now, so much of the Portuguese language is pleasantly familiar. I'm not naive enough to believe it will be a walk in the park, but I've been watching RTP and am delighted to see how much I understand. I guess my whole issue is burnout...Russian is very demanding and it's nice to have something else to switch to. I figure Portuguese is an "easier" language that is more low-priority for me at this point. Russian deserves more attention and I have more passion for it. Portuguese is more of a fling with Spanish's sexier cousin. Time is not an issue, I can devote one hour to each language every day and more on my days off. Plus, with all of the languages on my hitlist, I'm going to have to learn to start juggling, and soon!

I almost forgot! Yesterday at work I got to try out my Russian for the very first time with two clients, both ladies. They handed me a credit card, I saw the Cyrillic writing on it and took a stab in the dark. I think I only managed to get out a few words, but at least I was able to overcome my shyness. The older woman seemed amused, but neither of them seemed at all shocked, which is usually the reaction Spanish speakers give me. Maybe they thought I was Russian, I'm not sure. At any rate, I'll take what I can get.

Was it written in Russian or just in a language that uses Cyrillic?

It was written in a language that uses Cyrillic...I tried to look at it carefully because I know there are a few letters in Ukrainian that aren't in Russian, so that would've been a dead give away...of course it could've been Bulgarian, or any language really but where I live we mainly have Russian visitors so I took a gamble and it paid off.

PT:

I've been watching a lot of Portuguese TV today (RTP is the only channel I can get to work and even then sometimes it won't work outside of Portugal). I started work on unit one of Colloquial Portuguese. It's...sort of a mediocre course. It's not awful, it's just not Assimil, but I can't afford another Assimil course right now and at any rate Colloquial is the only one I know of that focuses on European Portuguese. At least it's interesting, and I'm finding my Spanish is really helping. Although only with the reading and writing - when it comes to listening comprehension, I really have to struggle to make sense of the spoken language. Well, that's all for today, I got in a solid hour of study without neglecting my Russian, hopefully I can do the same tomorrow.
Adeus!
