RTP is awesome! There is no dedicated Brazilian counterpart online, so I find myself listening to and watching RTP often. For some reason, I particularly like the RTP Africa services. |

I find it very exciting that one moment I can watch European TV and then switch to African TV, all because I'm studying the same language. Very useful!

PORTUGUESE
Total study time today: 1 hour 30 minutes.
I also watched RTP, read Diario de Notícias on my cell phone, and listened to
RDP at the gym.
My status so far:
Teach Yourself Portuguese(Unit 4/25)
Colloquial Portuguese (4/14)
Teach Yourself Portuguese Grammar(not yet started)
The Colloquial course is still my favorite, but the Teach Yourself course is so
friendly that it's hard not to enjoy most of it. Also, there is less English on the
tapes than on the Colloquial course, which I find much less annoying. My only gripe is
the actors who are supposed to portray Brazilian speakers are very irritating. I can't
say I ever liked Brazilian pronunciation, but these people sound really strange.
I'm getting very excited because every day that passes my ear is getting better trained
to the peculiar sounds of Portuguese. I'm understanding more of what I hear and even
more of what I read. The spoken language is sounding less slurred and more
intelligible. It's still a struggle sometimes, and I've found that whereas Spanish
still sounds clearly enunciated, Portuguese can quickly escape my grasp if I'm not
focusing one hundred percent.
SPANISH
Classes are over, so I'm not actively studying. I got a 91 over all, but then again it
was just an introductory course so I shouldn't be surprised. I am going to start trying
to get some listening and reading in as much as possible every day so that my Spanish
doesn't deteriorate. I did a little experiment today. I've been watching a lot of
Portuguese TV, so I watched an hour of RTVE from Spain and I found that I was able to
keep out too much interference. I have plenty of people I can practice speaking with as
well. I also would like to study Castilian Spanish more in depth. Here in Texas we
are taught Latin American Spanish, as if that's the only variety, but Castilian
pronunciation is so much more attractive to me. Since I am enjoying the Colloquial
course for Portuguese so much, I'm thinking that maybe once I finish my Portuguese
studies, I'll work throughColloquial Spanish to learn Castilian pronunciation
and review some of the grammar that's gotten rusty.

Eu não trabalhei nem fui ao ginásio hoje porque estou doente. Comi o meu pequeno-almoço,
bebi o meu café e estudei Português para três horas. Hoje usei o livro Colloquial
Portuguese e acabei a lição quatro.

Glad to read that you are learning Portuguese and enjoying RTP.
I would not say that RTP África is "African TV", but I see what makes you say that. :)

PORTUGUESE
Hoje eu estudei Português para três horas, e vi as notícias de RTP e um episódio de
"Bem-vindos a Beirais". Não trabalhei hoje porque é domingo.
Colloquial Portuguese (6/13)
Teach Yourself Portuguese (4/25)
Teach Yourself Portuguese Grammar (not yet started)
SPANISH
I haven't done anything in Spanish today but I'm going to watch the news from RTVE soon
and also I am going to watch Game of Thrones tonight in Spanish. I am seriously
trying to cut out every activity that involves English.
I'm also considering starting Old English during the 6WC in August. By then my
Portuguese should be in "maintainance mode" and I can focus on learning a little Anglo-
Saxon to satisfy my curiosity.

Portuguese in maintenance mode by August, you say? What sort of level are you aiming for with your Portuguese? Just curious. I've studied Portuguese since August last year, from scratch, and I believe I'm somewhere between A1 and A2 level now. If I maintained Portuguese now, I'm not sure how much there would be for me to maintain. :)

I see what you mean. I guess what I meant to say was I hope to have finished my
beginner's Portuguese courses by that point. From there I guess I'd move on to
intermediate materials. I don't actually think I'm going to "master" the language
anytime soon, but the idea is that I since I will have built a good foundation, I won't
feel guilty about starting a new language. I wouldn't want to begin two
languages at once. Also, keep in mind I've studied Spanish through junior high, high
school, and college, so most of what I'm learning while I study Portuguese isn't "new".
There's plenty of surprises, but there's also plenty that feels very familiar :)

Ah, OK. That is what I thought, but I did not want to assume.
I'm sure that with your Spanish background, you could easily surpass my level by August. I only study Portuguese about 5 hours a week or a little more than that, as my primary focus is Japanese, so it's probably no shock that I'm about A1.5.
Boa sorte! Tchau.
