Concerning time spent directly interacting with the teacher in a class, one should also point out that this time is
inversely proportional to the size of the class. The last class I attended at the Alliance Français had only 3 students
and one of them was absent half the time. Since I had great respect for that teacher and there was often only two of
us students, there was no way I was going to miss a class and in the end considered it well worthwhile.

At the other extreme, I talked to someone enrolled in a class with 16 students and she told me she literally never
spoke in class and everything she was learning was thanks to the homestay environment.

Also, has anyone seen a class where one student dominates all discussion, much to the detriment of the other
students - in effect making the class into a private lesson for them.

There can I think be some value in conversation with other students if for example one is a beginner and the other
advanced but I think it will only be the beginner that will benefit and this generally does not happen in a class for
obvious reasons.

I often took initiative and volunteered at every opportunity in my Spanish class because
I wanted to get in as much practice with my Teacher as possible, many times, perhaps 80%
of the time, I would be the ONLY volunteer in my class of 20+ students.

Some times my teacher would pick me, many times she'd call on someone else. I don't feel
bad for "monopolizing" the Teacher on the occasions that I did because I put forth the
work and effort to get what I wanted out of the class. Many times however, my teacher
didn't call on me even if I was the ONLY volunteer because she wanted everyone to get a
turn.

I just point out that after 5 years of high school French classes, I didn't know how to say "I did it", "I saw him" or "I know her", whereas I could name 10 fruits and 5 kinds of domestic animal.

Ah, so it's not just me then. After starting to study French on my own after not having looked at it since school (I did French up to "Higher" level as I'm guessing you did since you say 5 years, what a joke) I found myself unable to express any of these things and I figured that they're so basic that I must've just somehow forgotten them even though I could perfectly remember all the pets and fruits...

My Turkish is almost entirely self-taught, and perhaps some of my deficiencies in it would be removed if I had formal education in it. But it would have to be a good class. (I was in one for a few weeks that was fairly dreadful.) A lot of classes in any subject go at the pace of the least advanced pupil, and this can be frustrating. Often self-study applies more than ever in a classroom environment, with the added advantage of feedback and systematic pointers from the teacher on where you are going wrong.

Unless the person has him/herself learnt a language to proficiency entirely from classroom study, they are NOT in a position to make any statement about the efficiency of language classes.

I took French from grade 4 to grade 8, the only thing I remembered was that one French game that we played... I also took one semester of Spanish classes in highschool, I remember my teacher Mrs. Korby was really loud.. But That's all I can really recall.
