You are right. You will learn loads by doing Assimil just according to the instructions. Its an amazing course.

One of the best things about it is it can be used in lots of ways. Experiment and have fun!

Dont feel you have to put everything in there though. Why not have have fun with it?

The problem is that memorisation of specific examples can be done without generalising the rules. One of the things I like about Assimil (or at least some of their courses -- quality varies) is the variation in forms used, which forces you to learn the underlying logic of the sentences rather than memorising them verbatim.

You haven't learnt something until you've generalised the rules -- memorising stuff isn't learning.
