Chinese Character Recognition with Ipods | ||

I read in this forum that people use an Iphone (or Ipod?), when reading Chinese. I mean printed material. They photograph the character and the machine recognizes it and gives you information like pinyin or its meaning.
Can someone tell me a bit about it? What Ipod models do you need and where are programs available? Does it work reliably with small print or traditional characters? How do they compare with that Chinese language machines, you can also buy? I appreciate any feedback. I like paper dictionaries, but such a machine might speed up the look up of entries a lot also, because I could go directly to the pinyin entry instead of calculating stroke numbers and searching for the radical. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

There is a Chinese character dictionary app that does that. Pleco.
I like KTdict too but you need to input the character by writing on your iPod/iPhone/iPad. (Can do on Pleco too.) Personally, I think it is good to write the characters out with your finger on your iPad when looking them up. These apps and others like them mean that Chinese should be reclassified from "unspeakably difficult" to "not too bad" for those who don't already know characters. I haven't checked out the latest and greatest electronic dictionaries but some of those are nice. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yup, I use Pleco for this. To be clear, you need to buy Pleco and then install the OCR add-on that's bought inside the App. So it's an additional charge.
