A while back I did some napkin math, thought I'd share.

Percentages: listening*, reading**, writing, speaking***
Russian: 66%, 12%, 9%, 13% (native, 16+ years in Russia, ~120,000 hours)
English: 76%, 10%, 6%, 8% (near native, 10+ years in the U.S., ~60,000 hours)
German: 53%, 25%, 16%, 6% (formal learning, very low level, ~750 hours)
Spanish: 75%, 25%, 0%, 0% (informal studies, low level, ~750 hours)

* Listening includes everything, not just formal or directed studies, which is why it
dominates so much in the long run in my figures.
** Reading tends to beat listening in the middle phase of learning in school or in my
self-directed studies, especially if audio/video media isn't readily available.
*** Speaking percentages are probably lower than average due to personality, but also
seem to correlate with expertise in the language.

I'd venture to guess that on a typical day a very comfortable ratio for me is
75-85% input(LR) vs 15-25% output(WS) : avg 4    times more I than O
50-60% listening and 15-25% reading    : avg 3    times more L than R
5-10% writing and 10-15% speaking      : avg 1.75 times more S than W
plus or minus 5% here or there on any given day or even week.

Are you sure about the hours? 120,000 hours = 5000 days. At 16 years, that would mean 20.5 hours of study a day! Impressive!

Hmm, it depends on the language. In languages in which I have several language lessons during the week (mainly Bulgarian and Persian, 4 and 5 hours, respectively) I speak a lot and speaking is definitely more than 25% of overall skills In English I guess it's not more than 2% (but also because I read a lot in English - everybody knows that we can not rum from it nowadays). The rest of them are not spoken very often by me.
I listen to Czech radio the most, so it's, I guess 80-90% of my time spent with Czech. Less frequently I listen to Bulgarian and Russian radio, the rest - hardly.
If it comes to writing, I generally don't write very often (except my activity on Polish and English forums), but if I do, I write mostly in Bulgarian and, surprisingly, in German.

Though I would like to change these statistics a bit.

Reading - 20%
Speaking - 15%
Listening - 60%
Writing - 5%

Should really focus more on writing and speaking, but that is currently down to finding
time in the day to do those things, although I feel listening is very important and I
have that take up a big slot of my time.
