I've been recently having problems where I live recently as it seems masses of new
neighbours have moved into the area and they are rather noisy (not to mention their
children too). I've mentioned it to them when I have seen them, but they are the type you
don't want to associate with, nor annoy at the same time due to them being quite rough
looking.

So I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, namely noise, whilst
learning their languages and how did you cope, or work around it?

As you probably know, its awful having background noise when your really trying to focus
on something.

Consider purchasing some triple-flange ear phones. They will block out about 99.9% of the noise. Plus you can play music or a neutral sound effect through them during your studies to help with concentration.

yeah or ear-phone like earplugs. though if possible i prefer music or TV.

and to anyone else having a similar problem: if it's a family member, the best strategy might be "if you can't beat them, join them" :) if there's a movie on TV in the same room where i am, i can ignore it. if i'm in my own room and only hear vague sounds/screams/shooting, that's far more distracting somehow.

I'm easily distracted by noise when trying to read or concentrate. A neutral/white noise generator can help. There's one online here:

Simply Noise

I like the "pink" noise best.

I have an old radio which I have put between stations so that it just gives off a white noise hiss. If I use earplugs without white noise my hearing somehow gets more sensitive so that I still can hear the external noise. But with white noise the annoying sounds are partly drowned in the hiss and filtered out together with it. New radios are no good because they remove the hiss.

But most of the time I listen to TV or to my computer or my stereo rack while working. As long as I have chosen the repertoire myself it keeps me from getting impatient and restless.

I have heard about these coloured noises to use in the background for the first time in my life, so I read the Wikipedia page about "white noise".

I like the brown noise best because it is a very natural noise which fits in well.

I'm wondering if you've moved in near me! I have noisy neighbours too - grrr!! You could try posting an annonymous note through their door asking them to keep the noise down.

Thanks for the link Meramarina, I'll have to take a look as I can handle necessary noise e.g. cars driving by, even roadworks are ok; but give me someone inconsiderate with their volume buttons etc and it gets to me so I can't concentrate even more. If I'm in the same room I can't concentrate either because it's too distracting, even with ear plugs in or listening to music through earphones (that in turn becomes distracting). Might have to give colour noise through headphones a try so I can also spend more time with the other half *and* be able to study more too :o) Thanks!! :o)

Noise-cancelling headphones work really well. Give them a try!
