...when you start dreaming in your TL? I studied Spanish on and off for the past year
before cracking down a month ago, when I began spending several hours a day studying.
Then last night I had a dream in which, for the first time, the Spanish language was
being spoken. Not only that, but I was actually conversing with someone in the language.
For anyone with any expertise on cognitive science or language acquisition, does this
development mean anything?

I doubt it. I dreamt in French after only a couple of weeks of study, but I think that was because I listened to an hour or two of news radio immediately before bed.

It's certainly fun, but I started dreaming in Spanish very early into my studies.
Sorry for being a party-pooper.
Although, I'm not a scientist, so you may choose to ignore my post.

One language tutor I spoke to about this thought it was, but then another one said that
if he dreams he can fly, it doesn't mean he can, which gave me pause for thought.

It actually does something. It indicates your head is busy with processing the language and working on it even while you sleep. Synapses are growing, connections clicking ... that may not be what you think it means, but it's also not bad, either.

Sometimes I dream Kanji in my sleep -- except they're all wrong and crazy.

I doubt it, although as atama warui says, I think it is a sign that your brain has been
focusing on the language. Interestingly, after two weeks of Italian study and a trip to
Italy, I had dreams for at least a week about being on buses in Italy, listening to and
speaking to people. Obviously my knowledge back then was nowhere near enough to actually
converse like that, so the Italian in the dream was most likely not real Italian.

I had a funny dream where I was about to cross a wide boulevard and I said something out loud to myself in Russian, but I caught myself making a grammatical error as I stepped off the curb. While sound asleep I actually repeated the sentence, this time correctly as I crossed to the other side. Student as well as teacher while I snooze.
I'm also embarrassed to admit that last December I had a dream where someone on this forum, who shall remain nameless, made a cameo appearance, asking for directions...I try to remind myself that this is just a language forum, but apparently my subconscious didn't get the memo.
