I actually think сходил/а (in the perfective sense) means 'made it to'. I can't think of an example where this doesn't work.

I thought it necessarily involved the act of returning from somewhere, not only making it there. Can someone сходил to the airport to catch a flight (and hence, never coming back from the airport)?

В аэропорт ездят, а не ходят. From my mind сходить and съездить involves the idea of
returning.

True, they do involve returning. In most cases it's a bit like "make it and return", I would say.
