I remember a while back, there was a discussion going on about proficiency tests and a site was given that included
mainly european languages, and didn't include japanese... well I found a japanese quiz here that gives some general
idea...

http://www.transparent.com/learn-
japanese/proficiency-test.html

for the record, I scored 55/150 or 37%

I think that the main purpose of “Transparent Language” is very interesting; however, it
is difficult to evaluate most of Japanese students since they learn and use other writing
system such as kanji, hiragana and katakana, but not Romanized system.

I would have tried the test because I am curious how difficult it is and compare with
other tests that are more popular such as JLPT.

If they are testing Japanese proficiency, they should use the proper writing systems
and not latinised Japanese...

I just assumed that the romanized was meant to test words you can hear but not read in japanese, and they did use
normal text toward the end, but anyway, you cant get a certificate from this test so theres no need to take it that
seriously... it still put clumsy miles ahead of me, so I think it put things in relative perspective

Hmm, I scored 93/150 -- beginner level.   Yeah, 建荊, what the heck?   Ugh, and the Romanized Japanese, I have to read and stop and puzzle it out in my brain.
