I've been enjoying your log and see that, although we're studying different languages, many of the issues that you have are similar to mine. I originally thought that I would be able to study for x (whatever) hours a week, but then quickly came to realise that plans such as that only ever work on paper. If you work and have a family then the free time available for hobbies and other interests is fairly limited.
I have set myself the goal of studying 'most of the time', by which I mean around 5 days out of every week. I've been doing 30 to 45 minutes of quality study at home and am satisfied with my slow but steady progress. I do some commuting study but it's not as high quality due to the environment and lack of focus etc. I really believe that regularity is the key to success in language learning. Slow but steady pays dividends in the end.
I'm actually aware that, to take up a marathon running analogy, pushing oneself for extra study hours is the same as doing 'junk miles' in running terms. These are miles (hours) that don't greatly add anything to fitness (language ability) and give very little back for the time invested. In the end they just wear you down.
