Helloo.....so, I'm in South Korea at the moment teaching English and, although I've
tried, I'm really struggling to get into Korean language and culture. I don't find the
language attractive and I know I'm only going to be here for a year. I feel kind of bad
about this and am thinking that I'll feel less bad if I put some time and overdue
effort into learning some other languages, namely French and Russian. My Spanish and
German have also suffered recently :/

Basically, since graduating from university, I haven't done any language learning and I
think my brain is going rusty so I want to dedicate just a few hours a week to
perfecting my Spanish and German, and getting in some basic proficiency in French and
Russian. Here are my goals:

- My Spanish is better than my other target languages. I'd say it's B2, borderline C1,
but I haven't put in the effort I could have done with it. I want to watch loads of
Spanish films, books, and read the newspapers online in Spanish to get it to C1/C2
level.

- My German is probably B1 now. My major problem in with the language is vocab. I lack
a lot of vocab and have lost a 'feel' for the language since leaving uni as I did an ab
initio course and so it was already my weaker language.

- I never got into French at school but I've realized how important it is and how much
I'll need it to open up a lot of jobs to me as a potential teacher in the UK. I think
is sounds pretty but I've always thought it was a bit overrated. I think this is a good
next language to learn because my Spanish should help me a little but yet they're
different enough so that I won't get confused.

- Russian will be the first 'difficult' language I have attempted. I say 'difficult'
because no language is easy but Russian is the furthest I've gone from Romance
languages. I think it sounds beautiful and the country's history is very interesting so
hopefully it will be a good challenge for me.

I have bought a Berlitz Self-Teacher for French and the Living Language basics program
for Russian but, apart from that, I plan to practice and learn my languages using
mostly the Internet.

Wish me luck!

Since writing the last log, I've learnt a bit of basic French (numbers, colours,
vocabulary for clothes and other things, plus how to ask questions...'how many... are
there? How much is...?)

I've also learnt the Russian alphabet using the Living Language pack. I tested myself
using this http://www.practicerussian.com/Tests/TestAlphabet.aspx and out of every 100
letters I test myself on, I've only got 3 or 4 wrong each time.

I'm now starting the first unit in the Russian living language but there is no phonetic
transcription for the key words and even though I know the alphabet it's taking ages to
work out and remember what they all say!
