!שלום לכלם! מה עשיתי היום? אין דבר ;)
Well, that's not entirely true. We briefly covered future tense in Hebrew and finished chapter 20 in our course
book by reading a text about the (Hungarian born!) Israeli national hero, Chana Szenes (Szenes Hanna-Anikó). We
didn't cover everything we set out to, unfortunately, but we still accomplished a lot. I'm pretty excited about our
translation exam (Hebrew to German) on Wednesday. Wish me luck!
On a happy note, I scored a great grade (1,7) for my "The Noun Phrase in Germanic Languages" exam. Ah, the
exciting life of a linguist. A Linguist.
As I had a very long day at university and am about to go out to a Berlinale party (yay!), I won't be doing much
Russian tonight. I went through chapter 1 again and tried to talk about vowel reduction to myself, it went quite
well. I should try and convince my Ukrainian friend to chin wag a little with me about Hebrew linguistics in
Russian...
Would that be multitasking? Or plain nerdiness? You decide!
I'll get back to Assimil and will hopefully do a little French tomorrow. Thanks for all your sweet comments, fellow
language geeks - have a splendid evening!

Good luck on Wednesday!
As you mentioned the trouble with time organisation: google the Pomodoro technique. You might like it, it helps me a lot. (It's basically dividing time into chunks of 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes breaks. I helps with time management, planning of things, procrastination or getting stuck on a task at the expense of another)

@Cavesa: Thank you for your advice, I'll definitely look into this Pomodoro technique!
So what have I been up to lately?
The semester's finally over and my Hebrew exam wasn't as hard as I imagined it to be. Still don't know the grade
but I should be fine. Let's just hope I'll emerge as the victor from my annual fight with German bureaucracy, i.e. I
hope I'll be able to extend my scholarship. Wish me luck!
I've mostly been doing Russian, I'm almost finished with chapter 3 of my beloved textbook. Don't have enough
time right now to list all the specific grammar terms I learned, but they included "question word", "possessive
pronoun", "conjunction", "singular" and "word stem" among other things. Practiced how to pronounce softened
consonants, my soft m's are getting there, so are my soft r's (those are a MAJOR pain in anyone's nether region!).
So glad to have a native speaker at my disposal! Also listened to some Alla Pugachova. What a woman! What a
woman.
I'll start French Assimil this week, just in time to be one week behind Russian. I guess I won't mix up the two
languages as they're fairly different. A different alphabet seems to be enough, generally. Do you guys share my
view on this?
I also spoke some minimal Hebrew, enough to melt someone's heart with my quoted Shiri Maimon lyrics. Plus I
watched a movie, ha-no'ar, entirely in Hebrew during the Berlinale. I wish more hot Israeli soldiers would move to
Berlin. Sigh. But at least I found a new internship for the break! I'll be working for a non-governmental
organization/start-up that aims to make education accessible to everyone. I'll hopefully learn how to write grant
applications, get to know a little more about fundraising and maybe even make some online courses about
interesting topics (Semitic Linguistics, hell yeah!) in the near future. Yay!
How have you guys been faring? Never give up on your dreams! I guess that's the message of today's post. Or
something like that. I'm very tired. Wish I could just whip up some schnitzel and pancakes for a late dinner. I'm
so tired...

Wow, it's been a busy week with a lot of language learning!
Russian is going pretty well. My aim is to finish my two course books before April and really internalize the
vocabulary, whether it be general or grammar oriented. I also want to brush up and keep drilling grammar patterns
to make verb conjugation and noun/adjective declension fairly automatic. Hopefully, by the beginning of the next
semester, the only thing I'll have to think about while speaking Russian will be words that I'm missing... and not
about how to decline something or where to put the stress - because that'll all be automatic, finally!
I've been doing a lot of passive French listening at work. I wrote out lyrics to some French pop songs that I
particularly enjoy listening to and tried to memorize those while commuting. It's going pretty well as it's much
easier to learn this once since it's quite entertaining while also beneficial at the same time. Still haven't gotten
around to starting French Assimil... this weekend though!
I finally got around to reviewing all of the binyanim in Modern Hebrew, fortunately. Turns out I'm going to Tel Aviv
for 4 days in early April so I'll have to improve my spoken skills until then. This trip already motivated me so much!
In fact, I'm thinking about slightly twisting my language priorities and focusing more on Hebrew and less on
Russian. I always wanted to study in Israel at some point but never in any Russian speaking country. So it's only
logical to try and reach the level in Hebrew necessary to college admission and just do Russian as a hobby.
I just hope this is a possibility. Universities can be quite strange when it comes to students who want to do a second
Master's degree. Also, I'm not quite sure how I'd pay for that... but I guess it's possible to work and study at the
same time, just like I did in Germany. So excited!

Hello. I know that this post is almost two months old, but I just figured that a
constructive comment will always be accepted. I want to say something about the idiom
"אין דבר".
This idiom is being used when one wants to assure another person that he doesn't have
to apologise or feel sorry for something. Example: In a situation when you accidentally
tackled someone and he fell down, you will say "סליחה" (sorry), and he will say "אין
דבר", meaning "don't worry about it/it's OK". (The other option is if he broke his arms
and now will sue you for the medical treatment costs :-).
If you want to say that you didn't do anything today, you have to use the idiom "שום
דבר", otherwise it is not clear what did you mean.
It's always nice to see someone who takes interest in learning other languages,
especially if it happens to be my own.
בהצלחה!

Ben! I don't know why it took me so long to find your log – according to your profile, you've been a member here for over a year. Anyway, hi! I guess you may be in Tel Aviv right now - hope you're having a great time! I will definitely be following your log from now on. :) Grüße aus Leipzig! ~Jinx
