Hehe, we call such a person a "homer".

We have those type of commentators in the United States, too, but they are usually commentators for stations in those cities. For example, a commentator in Atlanta would most likely openly support the Atlanta team, and that's fine. If a commentator for a national network openly supports a team, then he/she indeed would be a "homer".

I am a fan of some Olympic sports which, unlike professional sports, I don't get to watch often on TV. As a teenager, I started recording everything I could so I would be able to enjoy it whenever I felt like it. Those recordings happened to be mostly in English. That's when I seriously began improving in that language. I was watching the same broadcasts over and over again, memorizing every sentences the commentators said even if that wasn't what I was trying to do. Then I realized I could use those as templates to write my own sentences. The funniest thing is that after a less than a year, I would not have called myself fluent yet, but I felt I would have been able to comment competitions in those sports, haha.

I really wish I could do the same with German, but it would be so much easier if I had many TV channels available...

Sports commentary is a fantastic way to improve one's comprehension, and since
commentators usually reflect the vernacular of their country/locale (vocabulary, cadence,
style, etc) what you get out of it is pretty useful knowledge.

Come to think of it, I need to find a way to watch Brazilian soccer with Portuguese
commentary.

This is probably the quirkiest things that I have seen on this topic, but I got wind of this item from someone who knows me as a hockey fan and linguistic geek.

The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company) broadcasts hockey games in Punjabi and for the playoffs they're showing live streams of some of the games (English for several games, Punjabi for the series between Toronto and Boston. I'm guessing because of the Sikhs who live in Toronto or follow the Toronto Maple Leafs)

Here's the link for the streamed video with Punjabi play-by-play. Mildly entertaining even though I don't get a $#¡t of what they're saying apart from "pass" and the name of the players.

I can see this approach works to a certain extent but you are being too restricted to sports terms used in
the language. The 1 thing that can throw you off in the Chinese language is for someone translating
names of foreign sport players with the closest Chinese phonetics. Takes a few seconds to figure out they
are referring to the name of a person rather than an actual Chinese word or phrase and thinking about it
you lose track of the rest of the sentence.

I also like a lot of Olympic sports, but I'm not really all that crazy about the more popular sports like soccer, football, basketball, and baseball. ESPNdeportes has some Olympics videos in Spanish to watch from London though.

Not really, you learn surprisingly many "normal" words. Commentators talk about everything, among other things the players' health (!!!), the weather, even the hobbies of the people involved (or their jobs if you're watching Andorra:))

Also thanks to football I've just learned that Amsterdam has three names in Portuguese: Amsterdã, Amsterdão and Amesterdão :) The Europa League final will be there and I'm very happy for Benfica!
