Empyrium has a neofolkish German-language album entitled "Weiland" out. Not entirely to my tastes, but it's decent for background music.

Epica is a symphonic metal band that sometimes has black metal vocals thrown in
They have a lot of Latin in their songs which gives it a rather ominous Carmina
Burana/Damien Omen sound.

Nightwish (symphonic power metal) has some songs in Finnish, not enough sadly.

Leaves Eyes (symphonic metal) has some songs in Norwegian and I think German. They are
all beautiful melodic pieces though, not their harder stuff. But I think you'ld
have to be dead to not get goosebumps listening to this stuff
Here are some links and lyrics...

Ankomst

I glitrende solskinn
Et landskap som våkner
Vi seiler inn mot havnen

Hjem til deg i dine armer
En historie å fortelle

Ankomst ankomst gi meg havn
Ankomst ankomst åpne din favn

La dine sorger hvile i havet
Et sted mellom nord og sør

Vinden synger de evige toner
En sage å fortelle

[English translation:]
Arrival

In the sparkling sun
A landscape waking up were sailing in towards the harbour [port]
Home to you in your arms
A story to tell

Arrival, arrival give me a harbour [port]
Arrival, arrival open your arms

Let your sorrows rest at sea
Somewhere between north and south

The wind sings the eternal notes
A saga to tell

Lyset

Lyset er evig
Lyset er livet
Gjennom årtusener
Gjennom vegger

Avskjed fra dypet
Avskjed fra mørket
Sol, stjerner, måne
Evige fakler

Lyset er vakkert
Lyset er veien
Gjennom stormer
Gjennom kriger

[English translation:]

The light

The light is eternal
The light is the life
Through the millenniums
Through the walls

Farewell from the deep
Farewell from the dark
Sun, stars, moon
Eternal torches

The light is beautiful
The light is the way
Through the storms
Through the wars

The Norwegian band Glittertind has clean vocals in all of their songs, meaning you can clearly understand the Norwegian vocals. They're folk metal and definitely worth checking out!

As for Polish ones we have:
Kat - satanic heavy metal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXWTlYzVFUA
Turbo - http://www.youtube.com/turbohoffmann a rather brutal form of heavy/thrash; in contrast to Kat their lyrics have Christian messages
Behemoth - black/death; worldwide known; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rT2dTnjcRs&hl=pl
Vader - death; worldwide known as well; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N83nV2fSh8
Esqarial - heavy/death; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzmQEAKWll4
Monstrum - classic heavy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBDK9Xgb2cw
Ira - hard rock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwHOJgypEVQ

and many more...

I'm sensing a theme here: most of the bands who choose to sing in their own language also happen to play folk metal. Not exactly my thing, but that's mainly for lack of exposure. I'll have to look at all those Polish bands, looks more my thing. Also, I didn't know Behemoth were Polish...

I find the lack of Burzum, Darkthrone (Transylvanian Hunger), and Enslaved (Hordanes Land and Vikingligr Veldi) in this thread disturbing...

I recommend:

Mystic Forest (French)
Ildjarn/Sort Vokter (Norwegian)
Novembre (Italian)

I wasn't aware that Darkthrone did non-English lyrics. I've got Burzum-Aske, which is unfortunately all English, but I'll look at his Norwegian stuff too... I just find it slightly creepy listening to a neo-Nazi Murderer...
I shall also look at the others you mentioned. Thanks!

No one has mentioned Dimmu Borgir or Satyricon! I know Satyricon is Norwegian black metal and Dimmu Borgir is Norwegian black metal as well. Look for "Stormblast" from Dimmu Borgir and any of Satyricon's older cds. Actually, Satyricon may be Finnish. At least some songs. Look at "Skygeddans" and "Forhekset" for songs.
