If the daily review queue is too large, you've probably added too many cards. I think that everything will be fine as long as you don't add too many cards too often.

I've seen people asking for premade decks (words or sentences), and if the decks contain thousands of cards, they're bound to get the maximum amount of reviews per day - especially since all the material is new to them and they probably don't do that well.

You'd probably fare better using Iversen style wordlists for initial study. They also work with forced recall of items to complex/spaced out to keep in your short term memory, and you can add those words you don't remember on the second day (column 4+5) to anki.

I had this problem too. It's actually simple to solve. The problem is your leech
threshold is too high. It's automatically set at 16! This means that you have to get
the word wrong 16 times for it to be dropped from your active learning pack. I set my
threshold to 3/4.

Works great! I get rid of the cards that didn't stick easily and I can concentrate on
learning new words. You can come back to the old words that have been 'dropped' from
the actual active deck when you want.

The thing is you've still reviewed that 'leech' card at least 4 times before it was
dropped. When that word comes up in class you will still have some idea about what it
means, even if it's not as active as you would like.

The other thing I might suggest is that you make most of your learning with Anki
passive. You just translate the word into your native language. That way you can learn
and review more words quickly every day. 50 words a day this way should be possible.
Also, hopefully you will get a chance to activate the words in class.
