Julie, my remark referred specifically to Die Ilse ist Weg. (Although we read Das doppelte Lottchen as 20 year olds...) |

No problem :). I was pretty sure you meant "Ilse ist weg" but let's say I had to use the opportunity to do some advertising for "Das doppelte Lottchen" :). And I did read it in German at the age of 20 or so :) but obviously reading a book you enjoyed as a child so much is a totally different thing, no matter how old you are :). (Which reminds me I have a couple of children books to re-read :). It's a pity I kinda missed the right moment (learning-wise) to read a few books in the English original.)
// EDIT: Overusing smilies quite a bit, sorry!

It's quite weird that "Le petit prince" is the usual 1st French book. It does not seem such an easy read for a beginner. As for the other books, I've read them too long ago to remember how easy or hard they were.
In 9 years of English and 5 years of German in junior high, high school and uni, it has not been suggested once to me to read a book in English or German so I do not know what the canon is or if there is even one. I think my first one in English was Interview with the Vampire but I am not too sure and it was a coincidence more than a choice.
