Just encourage people to use dialang. It would be helpful for a more realistic and objective assessment and future study plans. Forget about people judging their own skills realistically based on any checklists and guidelines.

Except that dialang has tests for only 14 European languages.

That's only about 90% of language learners worldwide.

The problem with Dialang is, apart from the limited number of languages , that it is easy
to get a good result if you know a cognate language (especially from the reading
comprehension part, but also in other activities, typically oriented toward testing
active skills. If I remember correctly, I got A2/B1 for Portuguese despite the fact I
hadn't even learned it! Obviously, it is more of a general problem with assessing skills
in cognate languages, but it was pretty visible in the case of Dialang.

It is also much easier to learn a language if you know a related language so your results are not necessarily way off mark. Speakers of related languages often get bumped up to more advanced classes. The speakers of a related language often get too cocky and assess their skills at more advanced levels than B1 after short study - something I see here often so Dialang might actually prove more useful rather than problematic as you suggest.

@Reineke
Generally, I agree with you (it is easier to learn a language, people tend to
overestimate their skills after a short study etc.). Still, I haven't experienced such a
strong effect of this kind in other assessment tests (and Portuguese wasn't the only
'unknown' language I tested). I don't remember the details but I achieved pretty good
results not only in the reading comprehension part (which could have been expected) but
also in the other components. I had no exposure to Portuguese whatsoever and my Spanish
wasn't really that good.

Yeah, but I care about what's useful to me and right now dialang is not. I'm not saying
that the 90% of people studying those languages shouldn't use it, I just want something I
can use.
