I agree with a previous poster that novelty is a great motivating factor in learning
languages.
I learn 4 languages simultaneously and would not be able to continue with any of them if
I was not constantly inspired by my studies.

I've always said that I'm married to Mandarin, but having an affair with Cantonese.
In reality, I'm in love with Cantonese, but I married Mandarin to be closer to her family.
Every so often, sultry Shanghainese, or tempting Tibetan will slink their way into my life and make me want to study Yet Another Language.
But I've found that occasional excursions into other language territories strengthens my commitment to Mandarin and Cantonese.
Variety will help to keep your interests in languages alive during the long, slow slogs through language plateaus.
