Thank you Jimmymac for having shared your plan with us.

I totally agree with Keith ... thank you Kathe for the wise answer.

I wrote this post a while ago and a couple of people disagreed about the effectiveness of using negative motivators to keep you on track to your goals. I was reminded of this today when I came accross a BBC article talking about the effectiveness of betting on your own wieght loss, and declaring publicly how much you wish to lose.

Hi :)
I find your post increadibly helpful, for the fact that I like many others here lack decipline and motivation since it's so seldom to find any native speakers of the target language in my country, so I try to motivate my self as much as possible through the net, and posts like yours.
I have a tiny little question, where I can find those FSI time-frames for languages that you mentioned?
Thank you

Here are my motivators:

- Others can do X whereas I can't. Why? For no reason other than they have worked at it.
- I too must work at it, for until I can also do X, I am unworthy and must feel shame.
- The inability to do X is of prime importance. It is first on the agenda, nothing can usurp it.
- And so, _all_ available time must be spent on learning
- If I am not learning or learning unproductively, then I am to feel shame.
- But there is to be no punishment, for not being able to do X is punishment enough.
- The reward for productive learning is doing X. Immediately, it is a reward in itself. No need for pats on the back.
- There are to be no breaks, but to avoid mental or psychological collapse or to perform activities that bring me closer to X.
- There is no need for me to compare myself with others, other than to chart my progress.
- In any case, I know that if I follow my instructions I will outstretch my competitors by great distances. I will be able to do X sooner, better.

I know that this works for me - it made me UK champ in something.

This is also why I stopped writing my log - as it takes away from practice time.

VB I find this quite interesting and I'm certainly curious about the UK champ thing. I guess I differ in that I wouldn't allow myself to feel shame. I don't personally see shame as a productive mind set. Of course I'm in no way criticising your approach, each to his own after all, but when I tell others about my goals it isn't so that the shame I feel when I'm not achieving those goals motivates me; it is to create a verbally binding contract that includes other peoples expectations. Although I'm an individual I can't escape being a social creature and as such people can have a powerful influence on my behaviour. So I choose to use that influence productively.
