One more point.
Even though they contain less vocabulary and grammar, I actually find the new editions more difficult to master, as they repeat the material much less than the old editions. This is particularly true with Assimil (I have collections of different editions for Russian, Spanish, Italian, and more). You're absolutely right. The older Assimils would let you review vocabulary through introducing them in the following lessons on new contexts, which was quite efficient.
