I am writing here hoping to find an opinion of someone who already deals a lot with
Russia or is Russian, since it is my aim to live and work in Russia.
I am currently, very unfortunately, a very busy person, running a business and various
other entrepreneurial projects - and with less and less time to dedicate to my cultural
passions.
I have "flirted" with 4 extra languages throughout my life (Latvian: basic, Mandarin:
basic, Dutch: intermediate, Japanese: intermediate) but am not very sure which to
pursue in a more thorough and active manner. Thus, I would like to chose one that is
realistic given my time availability (maybe 1-2 hours a day), that can be useful in the
short-term (would love to be fluent as quickly as possible), especially in doing
business in Russia/from Russia.
I would also start from scratch: Are Russia's minority languages useful? Tatar,
Armenian, etc.? What else might be popular in Russia?
I know I sound like an opportunistic business man but I am sure that once I have a bit
more free time I will start making less business-minded decisions about language
learning )))
Thank you for any ideas and suggestions ))
P.S.: I exclude learning Spanish or Portuguese due to personal traumatic reasons. Many
suggest they can be a useful addition to my language "portfolio", but... no, thanks!

Well, everyone in Russia speaks Russian. =)
I think that minority languages are of no use except you have a strong desire to learn some of them. =)
I'd advise you to improve your Mandarin...

Нет, от языков малых народов пользы почти нет. В России есть смылс знать английский, немецкий, китайский, возможно, турецкий. Тюркские языки (казахский, узбекский) могут пригодиться, если ты собираешься работать с гастарбайтерами. :)
