Has anyone ever studied at the Goethe Institut? I am going there this summer and was wondering:

What were your impressions of it?
How did you find it?
Was it helpful?
And anything else that you think might interest me.

Thanks!
Rob

Since noone else is saying anything, I'll try.

Did some classes in Goethe Institute in my country for a few months. I liked it. The class was sort of conversation oriented. The teacher wasn't a native speaker, but she certainly was very good. They used good books, lots of printed handouts. Was a long time ago, more than 5 years, so can't give you more details. But all in all, it was good.

I don't have first-hand experience, but my husband is doing an intensive course (4 hours a day) in Hamburg right now and he is very happy with it. The group is small, about 10 people, the teacher is a native speaker and quite demanding. The pace of the course is quite fast and he always has a lot of homework to do, so I do note that he is progressing quite quickly. There is a lot of emphasis on conversation and the teacher tries to identify the students' weak points and spend more time on those.
Hope this helps.

I attended their courses for some years, including an intensive month in Germany. Definitively THE school of German. A bit expensive though. Take it as an investment...

I currently attend at Goethe Institut and I think it is wonderful. Expensive? yes. If you can afford it go ahead!

I'll add my 2 cents:

I've just finished the online "GDS Aufsatz (essay) Training" course. I had my own private tutor who is a professor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. They help coordinate the testing. I used a standard .doc/rtf and wrote structured essays which I emailed to my tutor for correction. My tutor gave me a lot of tips and excercises for improving my writing. He was also very critical! I got a book and a 3-ring binder full of practice essays and tips for writing. I have to say it was a lot cheaper than a semester with him at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. I learned how to do a proper outline so that I can avoid writing off-topic (Themaverfehlung)-- which is often my problem.

It's a shame I won't make it to the GDS, but what I've learned from this course I can use for any writing portion of any test! Two of the best things I learned: how stay with the topic and how to pace myself so that I remain within the time limit.

I studied at the goethe institut in Frankfurt 2 years ago for a month. They offer intensive course but they also
offer (I think Frankfurt only) a SUPER intensive course, where you have class from 9am to 6pm each day!
The place is great and much better quality than if you were only to visit your local one.
