While studying in neighboring Ecuador during the summer of 2010 I visited Medellin for a weekend during the end of the annual Feria de Flores but am interested in perhaps returning to Colombia to see more of the country. What are your recommendations regarding destinations?

Bogota: The advantage of Bogota is that it is the capital city with many cultural and historical sites to visit. Beyond that, the Spanish spoken there is supposedly easy to understand and I have found what appears to be a reputable language school there called Spanish World Institute. The down side is that the city is quite large, the climate is cool and gray, and some say that the tendency is for people to be less friendly than elsewhere.

Medellin: The advantage of Medellin is that it is a more moderate sized city, the climate is more pleasant, and supposedly the general tendency is for people to be friendlier. The down side is that it may not have as much to offer culturally as Bogota would. Beyond that, I have seen mixed opinions regarding the EAFIT language program and do not know enough about the school named Nueva Lengua.

Leticia: The advantage is that the city is small and near a lot of nature that one could see. I found a school online called Amazon Spanish College that is located there. The down side is probably just that the city is isolated from the rest of the country.

Do any of you know anything about these cities and/or language schools to give me an informed opinion about which places are the best to visit for short term periods of time (2 weeks)?

Surely someone must have studied somewhere in Colombia?

I have not studied in Columbia, but I have visited Bogotá, Cartagena and Baranquilla a few years ago (under president Uribe who stabilized the country), and I had a very pleasant holiday there. As for Bogotá you shouldn't fear it - it is big, but well organized. I visited a science museum outside the centrum and had no problems finding bus routes - and the center is compact enough to walk through.

It is true that the country has been through a violent periode, but in Bogotá and along the coast you don't feel that. Besides I have read that FARC is finally giving up the fight, and that may mean that the remaining no-go areas open up for tourists.
