There's an interesting BBC News article about a new Jamaican creole version of the bible.
Quote:
The Rev Courtney Stewart [...] cites a line from Luke as an example.
It's the moment when the Angel Gabriel goes to Mary to tell her she is going to give birth to Jesus.
English versions read along these lines:
"And having come in, the angel said to her, 'Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women.'"
"Now compare that with our translation of the Bible," says Mr Stewart.
"De angel go to Mary and say to 'er, me have news we going to make you well 'appy. God really, really, bless you and him a walk with you all de time." |

Oh my goodness, I WANT THIS SO BADLY!! I was reading that passage aloud just now and it
made me laugh out loud.
On a serious note, I definitely think Jamaica should have its own, recognised language.
It shouldn't be a country of "broken English". I've never liked that term - it's
insulting. Anglicising everything just robs people of their heritage.
I for one am championing this move, and when that book becomes available I'll most
certainly buy it. It may be the only way I can get through that dense tome that is the
Bible. Lol

That's interesting. I worked with some Jamaicans this past summer and heard them speak their creole. One of them said we could understand her if she spoke it slow enough, but I could never understand anything they said.
I agree. I want a copy, too.
