Today at lunch time, a co-worker asked me if I was Croatian - I'm going to guess that this is not a significant improvement on my usual accent.

Woops! Felt good about the rest of the week, so I treated myself to the intro module at busuu. I understand Brazilian rather well so I have a hard time breaking it away from Spanish (or Italian) in my head.

2 Week Status - End of January
How am I doing with the tasks I set for myself?
Time to review the last two weeks while the girls are making pancakes in the background with lots of flour, French and German flying about. The little ones are reading my cookbook and counting cups in English. Nice Babel.
German
Check
Overall an active learning period, I'm quite happy with it.
- Activate busuu - 10 lessons: Really did not achieve 5 full lessons a week. Closer to 3. What I don't like was some of it was mechanically zipping through to get it done. So I'll go for 3 but focus more on getting unkown words in Anki or writing them out.
- Complete reading my current book: Struggling, it's a D reader, many put it back on the shelf and grab something a little lighter.
- 5 exercises: Done+, good learning tool.
- Activate ASSIMIL or podcasts: Got a lot of Assimil done and well. Continue with that and DW
- Cards: Back at them, quickly unstacking.
Activity next 2 weeks
Would like to focus on reading. I'll be traveling a lot so that gives me down time to work in the plane but it is also tiring.
- Finish a reader
- LwT: 2 texts? Need to figure out the exporting function so as to not create duplicates.
- 5 grammar exercises
- Assimil - do not rush to finish but rather complete each lesson with cards, writing etc.
Arabic
Great start! Need to get the script into a more active phase, couple of slips in passive.
check
- Finish with the Alphabet (all letters, all words in TAAHTRWI entered in Flash my Brain and learned): completed
- 5 ASSIMIL exercises : completed
Activity next 2 weeks
Kicking off 6WC - so I'll focus with at least a complete Assimil lesson per day + a podcast when I have time.
- consolidate script: make sure I have all the FmB pronuciations in Anki, work on the letters I sort of learned and which need reinforcement
- 14 Assimil
- 3-4 Podcasts

So I've put back my reader and have picked up Till Eulenspiegel. Much better and also available on the internet. Some uncensored stories here about farts and practical jokes. Not necessarily the nicest, but historical. My book is more bowlderized.
I've been having issues with German pronouns and particularly with some possessive ones. Strange after several years of study, so I decided to map them out in my visual tools -- aha, moment followed. My translation from German to English or French was screwing up a little.
Now posted on the fridge:

Morning lesson time was lost to a programming request on a forum I administrate. These little time eaters kill my small time slots allocated to lessons. So now, instead of doing a lesson, I'm writing here. I find this useful, not only to record, but also to get my head around what I plan to do. I guess I could just grab a coffee and write my list for the day but this is more fun and a little better to look at when I get back to reviewing my weeks.
Our morning ride to school, when I drive the girls, is dedicated to languages - the girls will work with me - today we did variations on "How are you?" and the colloquial "How is it going?" -- they young ones don't know where that comes from - "Ca va?", maybe something to explain - they would probably enjoy the scatological reference.
We worked on answering that question - I'm happy/sad/angry/hungry/fine/great. L asked to do it Spanish and then we talked about places that speak Arabic (they have traveled to Jordan). Talked about other trips and how P. can strengthen her English.
The girls often enjoy listening to a podcast in the morning but we just chatted along - I learned that the girls have schoolmates that speak (aside from the 5-6 major European languages) Japanese, "Mandarine" (sic), Wolof and Serer.
A quick read on Wolof tells me that verbs are not conjugated but that pronouns are. Wow. I. will. not. spend. more. time. on. that.
Ride back was spent listening to Slow German and Schlaflos in Munchen, as well as some of The Moth. I wish there was an equivalent podcast in German.
Today will be time to organize for the 6WC for Arabic - my material will be primarily Assimil but I think I'll pull the Living Language off the shelf and maybe the "for Dummies" CD - the book is horrid.

Living Language off the shelf and into the ipod -- I'm not so happy with the dialogs as part of that is just lists of words. Anyway it is a good time to double up on the starting material -- lesson 2 into Anki it goes!
Learning the -ki( ـكِ ) suffix for feminine possessive and the bi- ( بِـ ) prefix for "with".
Haha! Getting the endings of subject, direct or indirect objects is not going to be a stroll in the park. But I'm enjoying the script!

I've been discussing grapheme-color synesthesia with my daughter P, who has it and we tested her little sisters and found A experiences it also. This led me to show her the video about Daniel Tammet and I've also challenged her to think about how to use it for vocabularly learning and visualisation of words. She has a few days before she is to get back to me on this. We'll see what she comes up with. She's seen some of the math mnemonics we played with before but knows nothing about mnemonics so I expect her to come back with something simple, or she'll forget all about it.
This got me to reading about Moonwalking with Einstein and the Josh Cohen's blog. Which led me to memrise. That is a great site based on mnemonics for vocabulary learning. I tried it out and liked it, but it is a little buggy (as I ignored all the words on the list I was trying out, it got stuck) and i think I like something a little less graphic. But overall it seem to be an excellent site. If I can get a list that is up to my speed and not too basic I might use it. German = too easy. Arabic = too hard.
But the whole thing got me to thinking about mnemonics for words learning. I think I will have to try for certain words and even articles.
My method? Placing nouns in place (words with Das will be placed in the car - Das Auto, Der in ocean - Der Ozean and the river Isar for Die Isar.) We'll see if that helps.
