Matador Networks, a travel-oriented site, has a brief article on
three scholarships for Mandarin study in Taiwan: http://matadornetwork.com/abroad/get-paid-to-study-
chinese-in-taiwan/ (copy and paste, removing any spaces inserted by the forum software):
-Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES)
-Advanced Mandarin Studies Scholarship (AMS)
-Taiwan Scholarship
The author has himself "received two out of these three scholarships in the past, and ... used to work in the office
in Washington, DC that distributes them".
The comments/responses to the article are also useful reading. For example, one has a handy link to the
Canadian application form for HES; another indicates which scholarship can be used to study other subjects
(in Mandarin) in Taiwan; and there's also a question (and answer) about eligibility for non-U.S. citizens.
I came across the article while browsing, and (after a quick G-search) haven't found these scholarships previously
mentioned in these forums. - Hope some of you find it useful.

I got the HES scholarship last year, and I'm still here in Taiwan. The original plan was 9 months, and I'm now planning to stay and do my MA here too (hopefully on scholarship again). I've been studying Mandarin here for just over a year now, and have just under a year left before starting my MA, which will take probably 2-3 years to finish. So it's safe to say I really love it here.
Some of his information seems a bit out of date. For instance, I believe the Taiwan Scholarship now waives your tuition and provides you with a monthly stipend of 20,000 NT, which I guess works out more or less the same in the end.
