This is known as loss aversion. In economics and decision theory, loss aversion refers
to people's tendency to strongly prefer avoiding losses to acquiring gains. Some
studies suggest losses are twice as powerful, psychologically, as gains. So while you
might not be motivated to gain an hour of language practice, you'd be highly motivated
to avoid the loss of £20 and not get anything in exchange.
If the carrot doesn't work, maybe the whip will. |
