Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum, so apologies if I have posted in the wrong place. I have grown up being able to speak
PASHTO and URDU. Unfortunately, I cannot really read or write the languages, which is something I am trying
to learn this year. For anyone that has learnt the languages or been in a similar position to me, I was
wondering if you may have any recommendations on how I can do so using free resources and perhaps
comment on whether you have been able to do this yourself with self taught/study methods?

I am aware this section is for Pashto, but if anyone else speaks both languages it would be great to get your
views on whether it would be better to start with learning Urdu or Pashto first?

I do know the Arabic alphabet and was previously able to read some Arabic, but I would still consider myself a
complete beginner so I am really looking to start learning from the beginning.

Many thanks for reading this and any advice or suggestions you may have!

Of the top of my head the main resource I can think of is UCLA's material for teaching heritage
language - specifically Hindi/Urdu (in your case). The materials, including online courses on writing
various scripts, is free (though the script one requires that one create a free account) can be found
here . On the whole looking for
resources for "heritage speakers" is going to probably be your best bet as you grew up speaking the
languages.
