Yes, a German speaker would use "Ehrlichgesagt ... " (literally: "honestly said") or "Um ehrlich zu sein ..." (literally: "to be honest". Of course it's not a literal word-by-word translation - but the meaning is the same and speakers of German use (most of? - I have to take a closer look at it tonight) these connectors as frequently in everyday speech as English speakers do. You've made the point perfectly. If I have a list of English connectors, I can't simply make literal translations and expect them to make sense. Many of them will, many others will not. As you say, German speakers use "Ehrlichgesagt...", but nobody in English says "Honestly said"... unless they are a German speaker! Many of the amusing mistakes foreigners make stem precisely from using literal translations of things they would say in their own languages. I'm sure most of you could come up with a list of hilarious mistakes you have made or heard. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
