Good luck to those of you who will try out my way of learning the vocabulary. I have many years of experience with this method and I have used it to prepare 6 language exams succesfully. At least for me it is a good way of learning and I carry my vocabulary books always with me in my backpack wherever I go.

You can also check out the Emerging Technologies: From Memory Palaces to Spacing Algorithms: approaches to second-language vocabulary learning (PDF) for some additional ideas.

There are two things that I do. The first is just by doing loads of reading. This is how I build my large generic
vocabulary so I can recognize things. The second thing that I do to help me build vocabulary, and is my most useful,
is that I learn words as I need them either when I'm writing, chatting in a chat room, or when I am speaking. I write
the word down and come back to it later. I just try and keep using new words and as I use them I find I learn them.
I have never had a thing for flashcards or wordlist. I have tried these in the past and they ultimately fail for me.

I am finding that the best way to memorize vocabulary is using Assimil.
I am currently using two different Assimil German courses and I have kind of found that I
have more or less memorized a lot of the vocabulary. I guess this means that a good way
to memorize vocabulary is to hear it being said again and again and again until you're
really almost sick of it.
I don't know how much this will help when I need to write it but for remembering how
to say the word it has worked really well.
