I like watching DVD's to learn, and I like the sitcom idea even better than films. Each episode is shorter, and I'm sure the language is more everyday.

Could anyone recommend a decent French sitcom on DVD? I'd prefer one which has subtitles in French as well as English. I'd like to watch it once without subtitles, then once with French subtitles. Or the other way around.

I do not know what is available as languages and subtitles in the dvds = 2 famous french sitcoms are Plus belle la vie and Au soleil. For teenagers minded people there was also Hélène et les garçons.

Many sitcoms or series have their french speaking version. As for subtitles,
http://www.tvsubtitles.net/subtitle-65-10-fr.html for example gives all french subtitles for Friends first season.

I am not sure what is a sitcom and what is not ? Is ER a sitcom focused on the hospital, is Star Trek a sitcom focused on the Enterprise bridge ?

The most important is not to watch sitcoms but to watch something you like and will like to watch and to listen many times

Sitcom = SITuation COMedy; a comedy is something that makes you laugh.

Friends is a sitcom -- the situation is 6 young adults who live near each other and fall in love with each other.
The Addams Family is a sitcom -- the situation is a family who don't realise how weird they are and fail to understand why their guests always run away screaming.

I don't think "Plus belle la vie" is a sitcom.

"Plus belle la vie" is a really bad soap opera. I sometimes try to write transcripts of NCIS, but I usually give up after a few minutes. Dictations aren't fun. Watching sitcoms is way more educative and entertaining.
