That's not surprising. Just keep at it and I'd say after about a month or two of honest effort, things will start to stick. By the way, what are you using to learn the language?

I am using Hippocrene, I like it a lot, actually. Explains grammar fairly well, and
allows me to practice the skills it teaches. Also I am waiting for my TeachYourself to
come in.

Interesting as I've never browsed let alone used Hippocrene's courses for learning BCMS/SC (although I was thoroughly disappointed by their "dictionaries") I assume though, that you're using one of the newer books (i.e. "Beginner's Croatian" or "Beginner's Serbian")?

Yes, I am using the "Beginner's Croatian". I like it, like I said, they have a decent
area for exercises, and explain grammar points fairly well, from what I can tell. Also,
like I have said earlier, I have a close friend who is a native speaker (Bosnian to be
exact), and she helps with pronunciation and constructing sentences.
