That's one of the books I picked up late last year. I found it to be very useful,
although I was using quite a lot of it as a review by then. It does become more complex
towards the end though.

One thing I found though was that it was pretty tricky (for me) to make out the writing
in the manga panels. I quite like the idea of getting hold of some manga and trying it
out, but it put me off slightly that I'd probably have such issues with the "hand
writing". How do you feel about that?

It was after seeing your post that I picked the book up.

I find the writing a bit tricky too. But I think the writing in newer manga may be clearer and easier to read. I
would like to like to get hold of some myself.

I have a question about this example from the book.

Traveler: カツオブシですけど、いけませんか ?
Agent: い、いえ - no

Does this mean that no it's unacceptable to have カツオブシ and is a problem?

い、いえ been used to contradict the previous statement?

Usually Japanese use はい and いいえ kind of like true and false, but occasionally they use them the same way as we do, so it can depend on the context.

It's very hard to know what exactly he's talking about without the context, but the traveler is probably wants to have dried bonito and is saying something like "is it not available?" or "can't I get it?" The agent is saying no. I'm assuming he's using no in the meaning of "false" therefore contradicting the traveler's negative question. In other words, saying that it is available or whatever. However the comma makes it look like there is some hesitation there, so there is probably something more to it. Like perhaps that he can get it, but not easily or it's very expensive or something.

My (very awkward) translation (done without context, so it can be very far off):
Traveler: I'd like some dried bonito, but can't I get any?
Agent: Welll, Yyyes...

On a side note: That いけません (literally: doesn't go) is something we say in Norwegian too. "Det går ikke (an),"
or in question form, "går det ikke (an)?"

Thank you,

The example was by itself in the book and was taken from a manga.

I should have included the following in my original post (gives more context).

When Michael is being tested as a baggage-sniffing cat. He sniffs out a crescent-shaped, driftwood type object,
and the customs agent demands to know what it is.

Traveler: カツオブシですけど、いけませんか ?
Agent: い、いえ

Thats was interesting about the the Norwegian. I hope to learn Norwegian someday as well.
