INTRODUCTION TO TAC 2013
Although the idea of studying languages on my own is still quite new to me, I’ve decided to go all in and join the TAC 2013. Since this is my first year participating in the TAC, I’ve decided to do it on my own and see how it goes. Hopefully I’m still here at the end of the year :)
Spanish
I’ve been studying Spanish for approx. 2½ years at school with six more months to go before I graduate, which is why I have decided to make Spanish my primary language, at least until I graduate from school. I’m still at beginner stage but I want to reach intermediate level by the end of year.
Aside from Spanish I have a bunch of other languages that I want to learn. Although I’m not sure I have enough time to begin on all of them this year I’m going to list them all here and then see how it works out as time goes by.
Mandarin
I’ve decided to start with Mandarin right away. Because it’s so different from the other languages I’m not as worried with confusing it with Spanish as I am with, let’s say, French.
German
With its interesting history and contributions to both science and humanities, this language is growing on me. I really hope I can find time to begin on it this year, perhaps sometime doing the summer.
French
I studied French at school four years ago, but without much success. I still want to learn it someday, but keep putting it off until I’ve reached a higher level of Spanish so I won’t confuse them with each other. Hopefully I can give it another try in the fall.
Swedish
I have no idea if I can manage to squeeze in some Swedish this year, but with Sweden being next door and the Swedish language so similar to my native tongue, I would really like to be able to understand and speak the language properly.
Lithuanian
My only reason for wanting to learn it is because I work with a few Lithuanians and I thought it would be fun to get to know their native language and culture a bit. I’m not as serious about learning this language as I am with the other ones, so if I can only speak a few basic phrases by the end of the year that’ll be just fine.
Good luck to everybody! :)

INTRODUCTION TO TAC 2013 PART II – STUDY PLAN & MATERIALS
There’s still some time before the TAC’s begins, so before it starts I’m going to write an update on my plans for the forthcoming months. As mentioned in the first post, I’ve in total six languages (!) that I want to study this year. With that many languages I want to become organized (which is a skill that normally doesn’t come naturally to me…), so I’ve divided my languages into two groups according to when I’m going to focus on which languages:
The first six months I’m merely going to focus on Spanish (naturally, since I’ll be doing my exams in early summer), Mandarin and Lithuanian. Below is a list of the materials, I’ve collected for the three languages.
Materials for Spanish, Mandarin and Lithuanian:
Spanish
Books:
• “Mundos” (incl. CD) – for beginners
• “¿A que no?” – for beginners
• “La buena vida” (incl. DVD) – for intermediates
• Grammar book from school

INTRODUCATION TO TAC 2013 PART III – FINAL THOUGHTS BEFORE TAKE OFF
So, here we are on the very last day of 2012 and at the beginning of the first week of the new year. This also means that the TAC 2013 has started.
I got my books and my online resources for the three languages I’m going to study doing the first six months of 2013, so I’m ready to go! The only thing that’s missing is the CD with readings of the texts from my Mandarin textbook. I ordered the CD last week, so hopefully it will arrive sometime doing this week.
I want to be able to set small goals for my studying, for example how many hours I want to study each language per week or how many chapters I plan to go through in one week, but experience tell me not to do this, at least not at first. For the first couple of weeks I’m just going to see how much studying I’ll be able to squeeze in between school and work and everything else. Then after a few weeks I’ll have a realistic view of how much I’m able to get done in one week. Otherwise I’ll just end up becoming too ambitious and get disappointed when I don’t manage to achieve my goals.
Even though I’m not on a team, I’m still going to wish everybody good luck with their studies and try to read as many logs as I can. All right, enough with the writing – now, let’s learn some languages! :)

Hi! Good luck with your enterprise, which is huge. I think most of your languages aren't easy precisely, and all of them are quite far from each other.
By the way, just an observation.
Spanish titles (books, songs, films...) just have capital letters in the first word, so the rules are the same for them as the rules for every common sentence. Lately, I've seen many people doing as you in many sites. I think it's because of the influence of the wide range of English music in the Hispanosphere, since English capital letters' rules are different. I personally find that intrusion pretty annoying.

Thank you for the tip. I just edited the Spanish titles on my list of materials, so hopefully everyting is written correctly now.
