Somali

Week 2 of Somali class! Our teacher is giving us a ton of material. It's overwhelming now, but I think it will be
helpful when our short (6-week) class is finished.

Introduction / Isbarasho

Magacaygu waa Hamdi. = My name is Hamdi.
Waxaan ka imid dalka Soomaaliya. = I came from the country Somalia.
Waxaan deganahay dalka Mareykanka. = I live in America.
Waxaan ku hadlaa Afsoomaali iyo Afingiriis. = I speak Somali and English.
Barasho wanaagsan. = Nice to meet you.

Here's the exercise we were given to do with a partner:

Magacaa?
Magacaygu waa ________.
Waddankee ka timid?
Waxaan ka imid dalka ___________.
Xaggee degan tahay?
Waxaan deganahay dalka _________.
Afkee ku hadashaa?
Waxaan ku hadlaa ___________.
Barasho wanaagsan.

Some extra vocab:
magac = name
hadal = speak
dal = country, dalka = the country
gobol = state, gobolka = the city
caasimada = the city

The Numbers / Tirada

0 = eber, baabah, nag
1 = koow, hal
2 = laba
3 = saddex
4 = afar
5 = shan
6 = lix
7 = toddoba
8 = siddeed
9 = sagaal
100 = boqol
1000 = kun

To count to 100 is easy.
10 = toban
11 = kow iyo toban
12 = laba iyo toban
13 = saddex iyo toban
14 = afar iyo toban
15 = shan iyo toban
16 = lix iyo toban
17 = toddoba iyo toban
18 = siddeed iyo toban
19 = sagaal iyo toban
20 = labaatan
21 = kow iyo labaatan

I'm sure you can see the pattern. The important thing to remember is that the positions can be reversed, so 19
could be "sagaal iyo toban" or "toban iyo sagaal". Here are more numbers:

30 = soddan
40 = afartan
50 = konton
60 = lixdan
70 = toddobaatan
80 = siddeetan
90 = sagaashan
