Week #3
As expected I had less time this week so I didn't get as much done. However, I managed to stay somewhat on track which always is better than doing nothing. A lot of people recommend Deutsch - warum nicht so I decided to give it a go together with FSI. Now I'm working with 3 different courses and there wont be any more.
I'm somewhat surprised with the speaking speed in FSI compared with Pimsleur. Must faster but it's not really a problem due to the fact that you go through every sentence before having the listening comprehension. What I don't like is the really annoying guy who almost screams. It takes time to go through but I'm fairly confident I'll remember everything compared to Pimsleur and Deutsche Welle. Deutsch - warum nicht contain a lot of English and I'd almost say it's to much while at the same time going in a very slow pace. However, there are grammar lessons for almost every episode so I'm guessing you'll learn something. The most annoying part is a character who always seem to scream with a loud high pitch voice. An elf.. Sure, I get that they might want to reach out for the kids but giving everyone a headache? Come on.. Good work. I follow this thread with interest. I am still at the beginning with German, mainly because I got lost in all the material I've got, and it seems you went through the same. But you seem to be making a lot of progress.

Week #4
I gave Deutsche Welle a shot this week and tried two new courses. Mission Europe gave me very little but it was satisfying to be able to follow a story and understand everything even though I'm well aware that it uses very little German. I wasn't a big fan of Audiotrainer since you only hear the new vocabulary once - I probably forgot everything the same second I heard it. However, I did enjoy Deutsch - Warum nicht? and will continue to go through it the coming week. The only annoying thing is 2-3 minutes of really loud classic music in every episode for no obvious reason. That's a total of 5 hours in the course! 5 hours you could've spent on learning the language. I haven't mentioned it but I actually sent FSI an mail on 21/1 2013 asking about their current course LGM100 (German Basic course) to figure out which CERF level you're supposed to reach after finishing the course. Unfortunately I haven't heard from them yet but maybe that's a good thing since I'm not getting a standard message saying "we don't know". Only time will tell... Speaking of CERF.. I believe I've spent roughly 80 hours so far and it feels like I've "mastered" A1. I'm thinking about setting a target for the summer (B1 or B2) but I'm not sure how optimistic I should be. There's 118 days left until 1 of june and I wouldn't even reach B1 if I study one hour every day. It will take roughly 3.5 hours every day to reach B2 based on the hours below if I want to reach it in the beginning of june. Probably longer since I don't focus 100 percent while studying. A1 - 75 hours A2.1 - 150 hours A2.2 - 225 hours B1.1 - 300 hours B1.2 - 400 hours B2 - 500-600 hours C1 - 700-800 hours C2 - 1,000-1,200 hours In the beginning I got the urge to learn as many languages as possible including Esperanto and Mandarin but realized that I'll never use them. I've decided that it's better to master a few languages that I actually will be using than it's to know the basics in a bunch I'll never be using.
