NPCR isn't just for reading despite the title. It's a full coursebook that goes up to Upper-Intermediate. I don't think Assimil Chinses is worth the money but if you can get it cheap there's no harm in using it. I just think that NPCR is where you should put your money here. The assimil course if far too slow.

Judging from this website's use of the European language classifications, does anyone know where NPCR will take you to if you study all of the material? A1 - C2?
--
A second question for experienced, non-native Chinese speakers: how much time did it take you to reach C1 status?

It took me 4 years of study with a native speaker, two hours a week, to reach B2. Since then I've just practised when I can. I'm by no means an efficient learner so don't see that as something to discourage you. It takes as long as it takes.

Today was more of an organizational day.
I received a copy of New Practical Chinese Reader.
I studied 25 汉字。
I bought a pinyin training book.
I watched an hour of "quantum of solace" in Mandarin Chinese.
Unfortunately, I could only understand 1%, if that.
I did some research on how memory champions remember long lists of items, with the actual goal of
memorizing and being able to use my new language.
All told, I spent about 90 minutes of studying. The rest of my time was gathering my tools.
I need to increase my actual study time.

Any words of wisdom to impart here on how to increase efficiency in memorizing words?

As soon as I troubleshoot it and see how effective it is, I'll love to share what I find.
Basically, it's applying the memory palace method of memory champions to learning vocabulary but I have
my doubts about how efficient it is for being able to USE new language, rather than just memorizing word lists
and their definitions. Stay tuned...
