It's also Spanish for me. It's such a lovely and incredibly handy language that I definitely feel I need to get a decent fluency in that language. Spanish allows you to communicate in almost every country throughout the entire american continent, not speaking of Spain itself..
With 350 native speakers it will open a new path for me as Spanish speakers definitely do not tend to learn any other languages. Still need to mention that Spanish is plain awesome. That alone is pretty much reason enough to convince me that I should learn this language as good as I possibly can.
This also kinda implies to icelandic. The challenge is so tough and the price so awarding.. Iceland is one of those countries where I could possibly see me settling down in 30-40 years, if not even earlier. There is so much vibe around the country and the language that it indeed would feel like a big mistake, if I wouldn't take on this hard challenge.

I wouldn't say obligated but Spanish was definitely forced upon me fairly recently. I started to work at a restaurant
about 4 months ago and for my job I have to wear an earpiece that is like a radio between the hosts and busboys.
All the busboys talk Spanish to each other so I have to listen to it for like 9 hours every day. I wouldn't say I KNOW
Spanish but I already know more than I ever learned in high school, and it's near the point of reaching my German
which is kind of disappointing because that's the language I'm actually trying to learn. However, Spanish is much
more practical and useful in America than German. Basically, I'm accidentally learning Spanish.

I'm also choosing French. I'm not learning it out of necessity. I haven't treated it as
something I have to work on everyday (though I probably should!) ... but in a way, yes, I
have obligated myself to learn it. It's not just for fun, it's something I feel driven to
do. Not just so I can say I did it. I have a number of reasons for learning a language
and learning French in particular. And I'd hate if I were to give up on it, I'd be
missing out on so much that I'm striving for.

Personally it is keeping up with Cantonese & Mandarin as the mother-tongues of my
ancestors.

The only language I feel really, really obligated to learn is Portuguese. I mean, I could
buy a bus ticket to Brazil for cheap, or if I worked in the retail business I would have
quite a few Portuguese-speaking clients, or I could marry a man that has the habit of
going to Brazilian beaches every summer. AND YET I DON'T SPEAK PORTUGUESE, even though
it's THAT useful.

I personally feel the need to learn French as a lot of words in English have an origin in
French ...

I've always felt obligated to learn English for the sake of being able to communicate with the rest of the world, this is why I haven't enjoyed much in the process.
Besides, when you have a lousy English teacher both in primary and secondary schools, it becomes kind of burden.

For me, it is Japanese and Korean. I do not like their culture very much, and I rarely watch anime, dramas and shows(I know I am borned in the wrong part of the planet). I dislike most of the pop music with the exception of watching sexy girls dancing in the MTV. The reasons I am even picking up Japanese seriously are:
- to enjoy my computer games better as some of the translations into English are horrible.
- to know the Japanese girls which my friends introduced.
- to buy those models of girls on Japanese sites(even if I know nothing of the anime or games they are based on)
