Hello all,
Six days ago, I began my journey of learning the Turkish language. It has only been 6 days, but I have dedicated enough time and effort to know that I really enjoy the language, and that I am going to follow through with it. I have been studying German for a year and some change, and I think I am fluent enough to move on to another language. I bought "Türkisch für Dummies" (obviously in German), that I can not only start learning Turkish; but, also continue to learn German. So far it's been great ! There may be a lot of rules, but it all makes sense to me. I am having a lot of fun with it. Turkish has no genders which is awesome !!!! My first couple of months studying German, I was going crazy with the genders. The biggest reasons why I didn't give up are: I live in Germany, and because my wife is German and her family does not speak enough English. I was sick of spending the holidays sitting around while everyone around me had a conversation. I felt really stupid, so I decided to do something about it. I'm proud to say, I not only managed to get fluent in German, but I also CLEP'd 6 college credits, I'm able to watch T.V. without having to ask my wife for 1,000,000 translations, I'm able to understand the radio, and most importantly: I'm able to read WITHOUT a dictionary; which was my ultimate goal ! Anyway, so far so good. I'm studying Turkish, and I'm really eating up this book. I'm making notes of everything, and reviewing what I learned the day prior; before beginning a new lesson. After completing my notes and reviewing them over and over again, I will develop a good continuity book, to further assist me along the way.I'm hoping to one day be able to read literature in Turkish. Just found your thread, I'm gonna follow your process here.
Your strategy of learning Turkish through German is a very smart one, I believe it may be even more beneficial than you think. I will try the same thing for Spanish and I'm gonna use mostly English sources therefore at least I can learn the grammar concepts and terms in English better and I can stimulate my mind to learn more permanently. I have been dedicating a reasonable amount of time to studying, and the more I get into, the more I realize how
hard it's going to be. I don't have plans of giving up though ! I enjoy a challenge, and I'm going to ride this wave till the very end. Today, it took me 8 minutes to come up with this sentence: Bugün Turkçe dilbilgisi çalışıyor olacağım. It's very good. 100% correct. (just one thing though, according to Turkish Language Association, it's "dil bilgisi") But it's not important at all, because I too often write some compound words separate or vice versa. Thanks Murat! I'll make a note of that (Dil bilgisi). And yes, the "Hoşça kalın" was a typo. Thanks again for the information on the Aorist, it was very helpful. I have been reading up on it as well. I bought four grammar books, and I was only working on one of them. Out of curiosity I began studying out of another book, and it turned out to be more helpful that the "Türkisch für Dummies". Regardless I'm still going to work all the books, I'm trying to get this right.
I am really enjoying this journey of learning Türkçe. I guess that by learning German, I taught myself HOW to learn a language, and I'm learning at faster pace than when I learned German. I am really attacking the cases ! I have to learn more vocabulary though. I'm so eager to improve, I have to remind myself that I'm only starting out. Nice to hear your progress. Don't worry about starting strong, you seem like a determined person, I can't think of any harm of that.
You touched upon an important subject, about how to learn a language... Unfortunately I lack of that knowledge because I haven't learned English in a methodical way(that's why I'm still having troubles with writing and speaking) and now while I'm trying to learn Spanish I will have to learn also how to learn a language effectively. Right now I'm gathering my learning materials for Spanish from the web, can't wait to start to study.
