You can't trust Google translate to the same degree you can trust a real dictionary - the most relevant translation possibilities are often the ones that are missing. So for single words I would always prefer a real dictionary.

Most dictionaries I have seen on the internet are however clearly below the quality of my paper dictionaries, although there are exceptions, but even the mediocre digital dictionaries can compete with Google translate. The good things about digital dictionaries are that some can look things up by mouseclick and some have long rows of example sentences. And paper dictionaries are probably doomed in the long run so we will just have to hope the the digital ones catch up.
