This thread is amazing. I've got even more interested in Welsh since I love the way it looks written, actually as soon as I'm free from my exams I think I'll learn some really basical things just to satisfy my interest for the time being. |

After giving some thought to the original question, it's hard to tell really. There are too many to enumerate here which have little or no use, and since that is one of the main reasons for my choice, it makes no sense if I list them all. To name a couple of large groups: I wouldn't want to learn ancient languages and any languages with less than 10 mln. native speakers. That still leaves too many to master, so I feel safe I have't excluded everything :)

A geeky sci-fi language like Klingon.

Languages using a lot of Fs, hard stops, cut-off vowels all don't appeal to me.
Guttaral-sounding languages are last. Tonal languages in Asia take second to last, with exceptions to minority groups and island nations. They would start to attract me if used poetically and musically to create beautiful meanings if not beautiful sounds.
I don't take to the sound of Spanish, but may learn Portuguese and/or Italian instead of it for communication.

French, because I hate the sound of the language and Turkish...due to all the Turkish people in my area I hear it day in and day out and it's become so annoying that I could never feel more than dislike for the language.

So I noticed you have Mandarin listed in your profile. Seems like a tonal Asian language to me!

It's difficult for me to say I would never study a certain language, but I don't feel too motivated to study anything from the Tai and Mon-Khmer groups. I'm also not too eager to master Finnish or Hungarian (though I am curious about Estonian for some reason).
